OC GOP Chairman Will O'Neill sent the Orange County Fair Board Chairwoman this letter objecting to the display of assassination artwork.
1/Public institutions should exercise extraordinary caution before displaying imagery that canreasonably be interpreted as normalizing or trivializing rhetoric surrounding the death orelimination of political figures. Given that the Fair Board has multiple elected officials – including a Trustee of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (Michelle Murphy) – they clearly know better.
2/We also note that this was the first year in over a decade that the Republican Party of Orange County was denied a booth space to discuss issues with voters on the grounds that the Fair wished toavoid political activity. Displaying that photo is anything but politically neutral. It contains unmistakable contemporary political messaging directed at one side of our nation's political debate.
The photo communicates a partisan viewpoint without any balance.
