Hawaii Rep. Kai Kahele plans to run for governor of the state and will retire from Congress at the end of this term.

Multiple outlets, including CNN and Fox, confirmed Kahele's next move after the freshman representative faced criticism for continuing to work as a pilot for Hawaiian Airlines while skipping votes in Washington, D.C.

With Kahele, 31 House Democrats are not running for re-election in what continues to look like an extremely tough election year for the party, which currently controls the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Kahele's 2nd congressional district, however, is solidly blue, with voters picking a Democrat in every election since the district's 1971 creation.

Hawaii's current Democratic Gov. David Ige is term-limited - and several Democrats have already jumped into the race.

Earlier this month, the Honolulu Civic Beat reported that Kahele hadn't been in Washington since January.
