• The Target: A group of about 10 people—identified by authorities as Somali teenagers and young adults—were playing a pickup basketball game on the church courts. Investigators emphasize that the players were the intended targets, and the church itself was not targeted. Neither group involved is affiliated with the church or its school.
• The Shooting: Around 7:53 p.m., surveillance video captured muzzle flashes from at least two or three shooters firing simultaneously from a north entrance road. Rounds whizzed over the players' heads, damaging two vehicles.

According to a Hennepin County District Court search warrant executed on September 24, Edina Police searched a white Honda Accord left at the scene. Officers noted that the group of basketball players appeared "unconcerned" and were "laughing and joking" about the incident.
