Don't want this to be a sob story but its a damn shame, and I don't particularly feel like doing anything else.
I live in Santa Cruz County, California and today I was essentially fired (90 day unpaid leave and then reassessment). I worked in a nursing home for seniors with severe dementia for a year before the pandemic even began, and even then people showered me with accolades and compliments for what I did. Then the pandemic began and I worked in one of the most dangerous places to work at that early stage. The levels of stress were unimaginable as we ended up with over 30 cases and 9 deaths (that I know off directly due to Covid). It was hard but what kept me going was knowing that I was helping people that needed help and that their families considered you a rank and file hero for doing what you do, putting yourself and danger to help others, though I never felt like a hero, I worked before the pandemic, I didn't sign up for this, I'm just doing what has to be done.
During those times people would post signs outside the dementia care home that would read "Heroes Work Here". Every day we would receive more pizza, donuts, sandwiches, pastries, cakes and candy than we could ever consume before they went bad. People would never end a conversation without thanking you for what you do.

Now I left there for personal reasons but still work(ed) in the healthcare field, and now I get treated like a common criminal, having to be vetted that I am not a dangerous person and that I believe in the one true Christian God. I have to sit on the edge of my seat for weeks as they debate with themselves as if I am a war criminal before a human rights tribunal, that my existence is a existential threat to everyone around me even though I worked in a nursing home with dozens of cases and never caught the virus, neither did my brother who also worked there.
Today was my presumed last day at work for simply exercising my inalienable God-given right to freedom of choice, because The State has deemed me an undesirable after YEARS of being called A FUCKING HERO. All the sacrifices I made, the hard times I suffered, the true HORRORS of what I witnessed; I gave my life for the vulnerable and now I am a social pariah. And while I'm sure the families of those I helped, and my bosses (maybe, maybe not, who knows) still feel that way, this just goes to show how little the government gives a fuck about you and any of your rights. This is a slippery slope and one that will create extremists who will take this kind of news worse than me.
