Instead of raising the gas tax in public, Sacramento buried a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) housing tax inside AB 130 and quietly baked it into the cost of every new home and apartment starting in 2026.

A statewide coalition warns this adds up to $324,000 per unit before interest.
At today’s mortgage rates, that single hidden tax turns into over $700,000 paid over a 30-year loan.
