Climate Liars

Climate reporting in the left-wing media has become a series of endless, breathlessly reported firsts and 1-in-1,000 year events. “The hottest June ever in Houston. The driest August in Tokyo. The wettest April in London. The biggest wildfire in Quebec.”

The Big-Money global-warming climate-crisis industry has declared that July 3 and 4 were the 2 hottest days on Earth on record. The reported average global temperature on those days was 62.6 degrees Fahrenheit, supposedly the hottest in 125,000 years. The claimed temperature was derived from the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, which relies on a mix of satellite temperature data and computer-model guesstimation to calculate estimates of temperature.

The notion of “average global temperature” is meaningless. Average global temperature is a concept invented by and for the climate-crisis hypothesis. It is more a political concept than a scientific one. The Earth and its atmosphere is large and diverse, and no place is meaningfully average. Temperatures around the planet are constantly in flux and known trends are frequently ignored by climate alarmists because of their inconvenient nature.

Average global temperature also changes on seasonal basis:  For example, “average” temperatures are always higher in the northern hemisphere during its summer than in the southern hemisphere during the opposite 3-month period. Why? Because there’s a lot more dry land capable of soaking up sunlight in the north while a larger percentage of the southern hemisphere is covered by oceans.  In this case, the Climate Reanalyzer’s estimated temperatures in early July were skewed by a heat wave in the Antarctic, where areas may have warmed some Antarctic temperatures by as much as 43 degrees. This is likely the explanation for the difference between the 62.6-degree and 57.5-degree estimates.

Claims of hottest this or that month or year are based on averages of averages of temperatures, which in principle is an intrinsic quality and distinctive to a locale. The claim involves selecting some places and time periods where warming appears, while ignoring other places where it has been cooling.

One obvious problem with the hottest day ever narrative is that there are no satellite data before 1979. Calculated estimates of current temperatures can’t be fairly compared with guesses of global temperature from years ago. A more likely alternative to the 62.6-degree estimate is something around 57.5 degrees. The latter is an average of actual surface temperature measurements taken around the world and processed on a minute-by-minute basis by a website called temperature.global. The numbers have been steady this year, with no spike in July.

A proper statistical way would be placing weather stations based on square miles of area. Earth has around 197 million square surface miles, and there are 11,000 weather stations. Siberia has 5.1 million square miles and only 59 weather stations, when a proper statistical sample would be over 250 stations. Antarctica has 8.5 million square miles, and only 57 weather stations, when a proper statistical sample would require over 450 stations. The 48 contiguous states in the U.S. cover around 3.8 million square miles, which is only 2% of the Earth's area, yet it appears we have 1,218 weather stations, or over 10% of total stations. There are very few weather stations covering the oceans despite over 70% of the Earth being covered by water. 12 ships, representing 8 nations and acting as floating weather observation stations, are pinpointed over the 3,000 miles of rough water between North America and Europe. Why is the sample skewed so much? If the scientists actually wanted an average global temperature, over 7,000 of the temperature stations would be in or over the oceans, instead of just a few ships.

It is statistically impossible to calculate an average daily global temperature and misleading to tell the public that they do that every day in order to scare them into capitulation to the green pushers. It is blatantly misleading to pretend we can tell what the average temperature on Earth was 100 years ago or 125,000 years ago.

The climate is fluctuating and has always fluctuated cyclically and naturally.  It is arrogant to believe that politicians and bureaucrats can control temperatures, sea levels, and storm activity if we allow them to destroy industries that have greatly improved our quality and length of life.

Going back to the 90s, we were repeatedly warned that if we didn’t take away everyone’s cars immediately, all of the polar sea ice would be gone in 5 to 10 years. Those clocks have all run out and the arctic ice pack is actually growing, despite the climate alarmists’ best efforts to explain the phenomenon away. The Antarctic pack is breaking up in some places, growing in others, as its done for millennia, there’s still a lot of ice.

Our atmosphere is nearly 80% nitrogen, a little less than 20% oxygen and that 0.04% CO2, is all the plants have to live on. (And produce more oxygen for us.) If the level drops below 0.02%, all of the plants start dying and then we’re all extinct.

Extreme weather statistics have a different purpose: to frighten. They’re meant to make readers believe that a climate apocalypse(1) is upon us and that only by giving up gas stoves - not private planes, never private planes of liberal elites. They want you to panic. Climate change hysteria is driven largely by people so wealthy that they will continue to live exactly as they do now whatever happens to the global economy, threatens to undo the economic growth that has been the most important factor reducing deaths from extreme weather.

There is a tight link between the prosperity of the West on the one hand, and the escalating insanity of Western politics on the other hand. Outside the wealthy developed world, very few people care about the fineries of carbon emissions. Climate change, insofar as it threatens this prosperity, is the one agenda item that appears poised to eliminate its own preconditions. If the left-wing climateers get too far, they may well take the whole ship down with them.

The U.N. is planning to seize global ‘emergency’ powers with biden’s support. A so-called “climate emergency” or “climate crisis” will be one of the possible triggers for this, and with the upcoming El Niño likely to spike global temperatures, irrational panic will likely enable a power grab by the UN.

In 2021, the World Meteorological Organization released a 90-page Atlas of Mortality And Economic Losses From Weather, Climate, and Water Extremes. Weather-related deaths have plunged 75% since 1970, even though the population has nearly doubled. Over the last decade, fewer than 50 people a day died from extreme weather - on a planet with 8,000,000,000 people.
