Former Alabama Judge Sentenced to 51 Years for Abusing Public Office
Gilbert P. Self, former presiding judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, was sentenced to 618 months total—serving 12 years active plus a $5,000 fine.
He was convicted on 15 counts of abuse of office, lying to investigators, and perjury.
He misused Lauderdale County funds for personal expenses: a ski trip to Montana, cycling across Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, a home couch, his son’s college diploma frame, and prescription eyeglasses.
The AG commented that, “No one is entitled to steal from the public.”
