Tennessee's former House Speaker Glen Casada and his top aide have been arrested on federal charges including bribery, kickbacks and conspiracy to commit money laundering involving federal funds.
Casada, a GOP state representative who resigned from the speaker's chair in 2019 amid an ethics probe, was arrested on Tuesday morning along with his top aide Cade Cothren.
Prosecutors say that the pair ran the shadowy consulting firm Phoenix Solutions using the phony name Matthew Phoenix, and solicited business from the General Assembly in a scheme to obtain kickbacks.
Their indictments come months after a Republican legislator, Rep. Robin Smith, abruptly resigned while facing federal wire charges that involved Casada.
