Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is asking Attorney General Merrick Garland to ensure that the wife of National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan anyone who might be 'implicated' in John Durham's probe recuse themselves from the matter.
The Missouri Republican pressed Garland in a letter Wednesday after Durham included new 'spying' charges in the 'Factual Information' section of a court filing in a related case.
The explosive filing signaled a new turn in Durham's probe of the origins of the Russia probe, prompting Republicans to accuse Clinton of 'spying' on Donald Trump.
The pressure came on a day when Republican Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) wrote Garland to make sure he 'will continue to respect the prosecutorial independence' of Durham, after an explosive filing set off a political firestorm.
Sullivan, who served as a foreign policy advisor to Hillary Clinton during her 2016 campaign, has been identified as the 'foreign policy advisor' mentioned in the criminal indictment of former Clinton lawyer Michael Sussmann for lying to the FBI.
Sullivan is married to Margaret Goodlander, a former Navy intelligence officer and lawyer who serves as counsel to Garland, and has not been identified as a subject of Durham's probe or accused of wrongdoing.
In his letter to Garland, Hawley refers to the Clinton campaign's 'criminal enterprise.' He said the filing 'implicates' Sullivan, and goes on to make reference to Goodlander, who serves as counsel in Garland's office.
