@ICEgov
says it removed a 61-year-old Cuban national and Guatemalan citizen accused of secretly working as a Cuban intelligence asset — and fraudulently obtaining a green card while concealing his ties to the Cuban regime.According to ICE, Fernando Armando Valdes Perez was tasked as early as the mid-1990s with infiltrating and reporting on Cuban exile and dissident communities in Latin America and the U.S.
Investigators say Valdes gained the trust of prominent anti-Castro dissident Luis Posada Carriles and remained close to other well-known Cuban and Cuban American figures in South Florida.
Valdes was arrested July 10 at Miami International Airport in an operation involving ICE, FBI Miami and CBP. ICE says he deliberately concealed his affiliation with the Cuban regime when applying for lawful permanent resident status.
He was placed into removal proceedings and removed from the U.S. on Aug. 7.
