As an Iranian, this is the first time I’m seeing real pressure being applied to the regime’s rentier class, and they’re starting to complain.
This is the class that was always confident its position was completely secure and that no matter how badly Iran was sanctioned, they would always find a way around it.
Weakening and fracturing this class is one of the most important and effective things
@SecScottBessent
is doing to help the popular revolution succeed.Because this rentier class was the same bureaucratic class that formed the administrative and economic machinery of the regime.
For example, those who held internet licenses and monopolies stayed loyal to the regime because of those rents. That’s why they cut the internet on the people.
What happens now? If their rents and money are put at risk, they no longer have any reason to stay loyal to the regime and jeopardize their own future.
These people are usually the most opportunistic. The moment their rents are threatened, they change sides and rush to attach themselves to whatever comes next.
