The House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot is recommending that Mark Meadows be found in contempt of Congress after the former Trump chief of staff stopped cooperating with the panel.
The news comes on the same day that the committee released a report showing that Meadows said the National Guard was on standby to 'protect pro Trump people' in an email on January 5.
Meadows, 62, was a US representative from North Carolina until he was chosen as Trump's fourth and final chief of staff in March 2020. After Trump lost the election to Joe Biden, Meadows remained a prominent figure in the president's orbit.
The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack previously told Meadows in a letter dated December 7 that it had 'no choice but to advance contempt proceedings' against him after he stopped cooperating with the panel, according to CNN.
If charged, Meadows would be the second person in the riot probe to be formally accused of not complying with House investigators after Steve Bannon.
