A confused college student tells Joshua Haymes she’s a man, and she doesn’t care if he wants to identify as a cat. Then Haymes asks if he can identify as black, and her reasoning hits a brick wall fast. HAYMES: “Why can you change your gender but I can’t change my race?” [long awkward silence] STUDENT: “Um, because race is a like, is a thing that is like, a physical characteristic, right?” “That is something that like, you’re born into. And you could say, yeah, you’re born into sex. You’re born into gender ... But at some point when I was growing up, I started to get uncomfortable being a woman, and being a man was more comfortable for me.” HAYMES: “Jay, I appreciate you giving me your experience. And what I would say is that, why can’t I have that same experience with race?” “So, like if I said, ‘I have never really identified with white culture. I always listen to 50 Cent and Jay-Z and I really don’t feel like I’m a white person.’ “Um, why can’t I be black?” Her silence lasted longer than her argument.
