Those who have read my book Swiftboating America know that I’ve been highly critical of John Durham for undercharging Kevin Clinesmith and letting him walk away with a slap on the wrist. But Chuck Grassley’s latest disclosure, based on an internal FBI document he has obtained, shows it was even worse than that.
Clinesmith wasn’t just trimming facts or cutting corners. He was actively sabotaging the process and the people around him, systematically concealing the truth not just from the FISA court but from DOJ officials as well.
And he did all of this while knowing the case against Carter Page had completely collapsed. After months of surveillance, access to Page’s communications, and even a search of his home, they found nothing. In fact, FBI investigators confirmed that Page had been telling the truth all along. The real lies came from those who fabricated the allegations in the first place, like serial fraudster Christopher Steele and his sidekick Igor Danchenko.
Given the staggering corruption of Kevin Clinesmith, essentially a one-man arsonist burning down Carter Page’s life, Durham’s response is completely indefensible.
