House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy lost the first round of votes for the House Speakership on Tuesday, kicking off a dramatic session that is expected to last hours.
It became apparent soon after the roll call vote began that McCarthy did not have the votes to outright win the gavel.
Audible gasps could be heard in the cavernous House chamber as more than a dozen Republican lawmakers stood in defiance to the California legislator's bid.
Proceedings began with GOP Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik nominating McCarthy, as expected, and Democrats' new No. 3 Pete Aguilar naming the 118th Congress' new Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Then, far-right Rep. Paul Gosar stood to nominate GOP Rep. Andy Biggs - one of the original five Republican lawmakers to lead opposition to McCarthy.
Over the course of the vote, however - done in alphabetical order - some members threw wild cards into the mix.

If McCarthy wins the Republican leadership, the Republican base will be very disappointed.....again! He is in McConnell's pocket and they will be right back to eating the crumbs that falls off the Democrats table like they have done since the 70's.
Perhaps McCarthy will turn out to be a good Speaker, in spite of himself. The holdouts have made specific demands and he has agreed to them, even though you could tell, he did not like what they demanded of him. He will be held accountable for his actions, since now it only requires a demand by just ONE member to remove him.
Thiis fiasco at present seems to be poor and misguided judgement, But i do believe there may be some positives come out of this, But to the public it seems Republicans cant get anything accomplished, I beg to differ there are some procedural changes that may very well be positive. For many years through many different administrations the Speaker of the House has ran the house like a dictatorship forcing member through threats and intimidation to vote on specific legislation, and that has been especially true under NANCY PELOSI, The changes that are being proposed will be positive allowing members to cast their votes on what they believe is best for the country and their districts, We send these officials to Washington to represent us not to be intimidated by threats to vote for legislation they dont believe in or support, Although this appears to be a lack of unity within the Republican Party I believe the changes they seek will turn into a positive, But its time now to get it done as it stands at present we actually have NO FUNCTIONG HOUSE OF REPRESENTIVES.
The public hasn't paid proper attention for way too long, and now they only hear what the left wants them to hear...." republicans are bad". No different when Trump was in power, Trump was bad! The public and media can scream all they want, these guys are finally doing what should have been done decades ago. Don't put someone in power just because they are "next in line", we aren't a kingdom but a republic, we need the man who best looks out for the republic. It's not who can do the most for those who voted him in, but to take care and keep the REPUBLIC healthy! Whatever it takes to put the best man in charge!
I BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO DO, MCCARTHY may not be the best candidate i personally dont think he is but the holdouts i believe are trying to make changes but they need to get it decided
Recalling some history of the Republican party - - - they seem to enjoy "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory"! They have done it for decades, so you would think, by now, they would know better.
Before the day was done, there were 4 votes and McCarthy lost all 4. I would nominate and vote for Steve Scalise in a heartbeat, the others, I am not too sure of, perhaps Jim Jordan. But then, I am not there.
Scalise voted for McCarthy. R's or McCarthy himself, threatened the holdouts with being yanked from committee assignments and with getting no new assignments.
Right and threats, like that, are a Pelosi tactic. I would hope McCarthy does NOT operate in the same manner she did.
Oh well.........it happens.......eve4y so often some politicians grow some balls!
All the media, the people who are opposed to this are missing what is driving this. the beauty of all this. I'm disappointed in them all, including Trump trying to hurry this along, McCarthy is not a straight shooter, he is not a true Republican, he is not one with a strong spine, infact I wonder if they keep him in a brace to keep him upright....McCarthy is for sale!
