And if Trump wins a second term—especially if that victory relies on another rural surge to overcome massive opposition across the big metros—the chaos in Portland might look like only the preliminary skirmish for an even more incendiary collision to come.
New offensives against major cities from President Donald Trump and GOP governors are pushing at the central geographic fault line between the Republican and Democratic coalitions.
On one front, Trump is taking his confrontational approach toward big cities to an ominous new level by deploying federal law-enforcement officials to Portland and potentially other locales over the objection of local officials.
On the other, Republican governors, especially but not exclusively across the Sun Belt, have repeatedly blocked mostly Democratic local leaders from locking down their communities, despite exploding caseloads in cities from Atlanta to Phoenix. These orders represent a new crest in a decade-long wave of actions by Republican state officials to preempt decisions made by local Democratic governments.
“We haven’t had issues that are so immediately pressing and so much involving public health and safety,” says Richard Briffault, a Columbia University law professor who has studied state preemption of municipal actions. While states moving to block cities from raising the minimum wage or declaring themselves an immigration sanctuary “are important issues … in the sense that these are pressing, in-the-moment decisions that are directly affecting the health and welfare of a lot of people, this is unique,” he told me.
In deploying federal forces, Trump appears to be trying to provoke clashes with protesters, which he can use to convince white suburban voters that he’s the last line of defense between them and the chaos allegedly incubating in cities, Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor, told me. Referring to the street battle between construction workers and anti-war protesters in Manhattan in 1970, Emanuel said, “Trump is trying to create his own hard-hat riot, and they are wearing [law-enforcement] helmets.”

Vietnam was different since we had to fight them on their turf in their country where they had superior local knowledge. That's the problem we encounter in the mountains of Afghanistan, too.
I am not so sure sanctions don't work. We can't turn back the wheel of time and see what would have happened if we didn't impose sanctions on Cuba or Iran. Then again, I think that sanctions tend to be counterproductive because the sanctioned country's leaders can dig in with an "us against them" invoking the patriotism that exists in any country of this world. If we engaged these countries with the blessings of capitalism, the Cuban regime might have faltered a long time ago. Who knows? As I said, we can't turn back the wheel of time.
Wrong... both Taiwan and the Philippines have mutual defense treaties and agreements with the US... both are under constant threat by China, any war started involving our treaty parties will bring the US into that war... A weakened US has already brought threats from china against both the Philipines and Taiwan. If we engaged in a full-scale civil war we should anticipate Taiwan to become embroiled in an annexation war with China... and I am not certain the US would honor its treaty... probably claiming Taiwan is part of China and hence the treaty is void... who knows... but it doesn't look good.
We better get ready since Trump will win with another landslide in November.
The only thing that Socialism bring to the table is fear, guess what I'm voting for Trump I'm fighting for my Freedom. Many years ago I went to Vietnam to defend our freedom today I asked vote for President Trump and defend our freedom our way of life. For those that don't love our country's life go to where you feel comfortable this is a free country no body is forcing you to stay.
I think the real question may be, can we avoid civil war no matter who wins ?
Civil War can be avoided if the President Declares a state of National Emergency... and Martial Law... to permit a thorough purge of all the insurrection, sedition, and domestic terrorism presenting itself as a clear and present danger to our Republic. Pres. Trump needs to take a page for Lincoln and declare martial law for the purpose of restoring Constitutional Government to the Republic...
Currently, many members of Congress, the administration, judiciary, governors, mayors, and city counsels are all acting illegally... to support insurrection, sedition, and domestic terrorism. It is up to the President to put it down... and to bring to justice all those who have supported, funded, organized, planned or aided and abetted such unlawful conduct... the DEEP STATE and SWAMP included.
I totally agree with you Colonel, it needs to be done!
!!!!! COOOOOOOOOLLLLLL !!!!! I'M LOCKED & LOADED !!!!!!!!
No, civil war is most cruel being fought in the living rooms and schoolyards of America... in the cities and fields that our youth frequent... it destroys both the fabric and soul of entire nations... civil war must be avoided... that is why Martial Law NOW... focused on purging the insurrection of the DEEP STATE and SWAMP is so necessary... before Civil War occurs.
Once the door to civil war is breached there will be no going back to bolt it closed... as both political parties will suffer huge losses and with them, any desire to find a peaceful solution will be replaced with the desire for blood and vengeance.
Well said Colonel. Although it is good to stay prepared, but to "wish" it to come is insane...
