San Francisco police officers will be replaced with trained, unarmed professionals to respond to calls for help on noncriminal matters involving mental health, the homeless, school discipline and neighbor disputes, as part of a new wave of police reforms.

That change and others, which will be implemented over the coming months, are part of a plan by Mayor London Breed to try to reduce police confrontations with the community. Breed unveiled her proposals after weeks of massive protests over the May 25 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

“San Francisco has made progress reforming our police department, but we know that we still have significant work to do,” Breed said. “We know that a lack of equity in our society overall leads to a lot of the problems that police are being asked to solve.”

  • Maybe the dumb voters will elect someone that will save the city; like a  Republican.

  • So, what will happen when the first of the unarmed idiots is killed in a domestic dispute case?  Hell, armed officers have been injured and killed in those situations.

Many years ago I was at a bar where a man started beating on his wife.  I stopped him and ended up in a fight with him AND his wife.  Damn near got my ass kicked with the 2 of them beating on me.  A friend that I was with took the woman off me and saved me from major problems.

  • Dumbest thing I ever heard.  As a retired police officer I can tell you that unless you are fully prepared to deal with anything AND ARMED - innocent people will die.

  • Neigbor and domestic disputes are amongh the most volatile calls police can make. From what I've read, most police officers hate those calls because they can go bad so quickly and without much warning. Unarmed professionals should do really well, no problem. Right. I think the mayors and councilmen should go out on these calls before passing judgement on the police. They might have a change of heart. I'm thinking that many small communites around the nation are going to benefit from the exodus of big-city cops as they look for more normal communities to live and work in. Their new communities will be getting experienced police without the cash outlay of acadamy training, rookie training, etc., etc.

  • Does that mean they won't get my cat out of the tree in my back yard anymore... or provide security for the local politicians?
