Thoughts on Civil Disobedience – Metamedia News

The language in a rural Michigan county board resolution defying statewide coronavirus restrictions alluded to the civil disobedience shown at the Boston Tea Party.

“We are not advocating for overthrow or abolishment,” according to Alcona County Resolution 2020-13, “but if these practices continue, (we advocate for) civil disobedience and ignoring the over-reaching and oppressive Executive Orders that have been inflicted on our citizens, akin to the Boston Tea Party, which was respectful to the cargo vessels but not the cargo itself.”

Instead of tossing tea into the water, the “cargo” in this case would mean “a return to normal life” by choosing not to follow statewide mandates for virtual education and mask-wearing, said Alcona County Commissioner Gary Wnuk of the United States Taxpayers Party, who authored the resolution.

Wnuk and the other four Republican county commissioners unanimously approved the Aug. 19 resolution, which also requested Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to place Alcona County in the same region as other Northern Michigan counties with less restrictions.

Currently, the farmland county of more than 10,000 people is in Region 4 of the Michigan Economic Recovery Council, adhering it to the same restrictions as Bay City and Saginaw. The board requested a redesignation to Region 6 and Northern Michigan, which is in Phase 5, or the least restrictive part of Whitmer’s “Safe Start Plan.”
