At the La Defensa Del Pueblo summit, Minnesota organizer Waris Mohammad describes the local campaign that helped shut down roughly 800 businesses at Karmel Mall in response to ICE enforcement.
Mohammad says organizers spent three days persuading business owners to stop “business as usual,” and that the effort extended beyond the mall to "mosque leaders, churches, universities, and unions."
After another fatal encounter involving ICE, she says organizers again shut down Karmel Mall before a larger January 30 mobilization that she claims drew 100,000 people.
This is also the original Minnesota campaign that former PSL Central Committee member Walter Smolarek later said the Party for Socialism and Liberation tried to co-opt and rebrand into a national “general strike” campaign.
