I'm a native New Yorker (UES), and I'll say the part nobody wants to admit:
The reason NYC consistently elects so many bad politicians is that a significant portion of New Yorkers rely on some form of welfare or public assistance. To win, a politician often only needs to promise more handouts. And it works -- again and again.
New Yorkers tend to fall into three categories:
1. Those with wealth
2. Those who struggle but manage
3. Those with a parasite mentalityLook at the data on housing programs, welfare, and other forms of public assistance. A huge portion of the city depends on these systems.
Naturally, someone who relies on such programs will vote in their own interest -- for whoever promises more benefits.
Time after time, politicians win by pledging more giveaways and by demonizing the wealthy as being responsible for others’ lack. And the votes pour in.
Many average New Yorkers don’t fully understand the economics or feasibility behind political promises -- and often, they don’t care.
As long as they believe more welfare-type benefits are coming their way, many will vote without thinking beyond that.
That’s the real issue.
Add to that a city and state government notorious for overspending and corruption, and you get the same outcome every election cycle.
That’s why NYC repeatedly ends up with leaders who are laughably inefficient, shamefully ineffective, and shockingly clueless.
