We warned you, New Jersey. Here's the bill.

Last year I warned that @MikieSherrill's "rate freeze" was theater. Nine months into her term, let's check the scoreboard.

Last year I warned that
@MikieSherrill
's "rate freeze" was theater. Nine months into her term, let's check the scoreboard.The freeze that wasn't. Her Day One order asks the BPU to consider pausing hikes and hands out credits if rates rise anyway. That's not a freeze. It's a coupon. Even the state's Rate Counsel warned utilities could get a bigger increase in 2027 or collect interest instead. Kicking the can.
The can already rolled back. Last summer's offset expired May 31, so after a 17.24% supply spike you're paying full freight: about 25 cents per kWh, 36% above the national average. Your relief? A $25 credit. $150 if you qualify. Don't spend it all at once.
Deferral is debt in a nice suit. Take more of your money, hand back a sliver, call it relief. Mandate what gets built, block what doesn't fit the plan, then act shocked when there's no power. Central planning never worked in Havana and it won't work in Trenton.
Supply? More than 40% of our power is imported. The state touts 18 approved solar and battery projects and 3,000 MW of community solar. Approvals aren't power plants. Nuclear has no timeline. PJM's 2027 to 2028 auction came up 5.2% short of what's needed to keep the lights reliably on. And JCP&L wants 8.8% more, about $170 a year, starting January 2028. Safely after the election.
The one lever she controls, she won't pull. NJ collected $980.8 million in utility sales tax in 2024, per the Census Bureau. The state projected $1.15 billion for fiscal 2026, up $156 million. S1932 would have suspended that tax for 2026. It never got a vote. The record budget left the sales tax untouched. Why would they cut it? It's working great for them.
Still a shareholder. She holds funds whose top holdings include PSEG, FirstEnergy (JCP&L's parent), Duke, Exelon, and AEP. Her household reported $3.9 million in income and $103,000 in dividends in 2025. The referee in your fight with the utilities collects dividends from the utilities.
And always a boogeyman: PJM, Washington, data centers. Some of it's real. That's exactly why you cut the one charge you control. Blame isn't a policy.
Midterms are coming, so expect credits timed to the calendar and more villains. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
We warned you. Open your bill. Then vote.
