COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed legislation Wednesday that would have required photo identification for Ohioans casting ballots by mail or through online absentee requests.

Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed legislation Wednesday that would have required photo identification for Ohioans casting ballots by mail or through online absentee requests.
The Republican-led General Assembly passed House Bill 472 earlier this month. Sponsors said the measure would add a basic layer of security to a voting method used by more than a million Ohioans in recent cycles. DeWine rejected that view in his veto message.“The bill would not discourage fraud, add real security, and would impose a significant burden on Ohioans who vote by mail,” the governor stated.
Under current law, mail-in voters must provide a signature and either the last four digits of a Social Security number or a driver’s license number. The vetoed bill would have added a requirement to upload or mail a copy of photo ID. #Ohio
