Even worse- a TV news commentator was randomly interviewing public spectators last Fri. night, during the celebrating on a main thoroughfare in Nashville.
He approached an average American family of 4, father, mother, a middle school boy and an older high school sophomore boy. Interviewer asked if they were enjoying the celebration and did they understand what we were celebrating. Their responses were positive, but then he asked if they understood the phrase - "One if by land and two if by sea"; or what was its source and meaning? Sadly, neither boy, nor the adult parents could answer - they just shook their heads "no".
That phrase was from "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere"; I remember a lot of it, but not all. "Twas the 18th of April, in '75,- hardly a man is now alive, who remembers that famous day and year of the midnight ride of Paul Revere"!
And somewhere, in that poem, was Revere's instruction to his fellow Patriot, regarding the use of the lanterns to indicate how the British were making their approach to Boston- - "One if by land and two if by sea and I on the opposite shore will be!"
Color me surprised. I had design students, just a couple or three, who could not comprehend that margins were necessary in designing a page of text, Their own Objective, Process, Reflection on the project just completed. It occurred to me that these three had never read a book and thus, didn't understand the need for a place to put the fingers so the text wasn't covered up. And zero concept of white space as being just as integral in design as the actual text/image, etc. To most it became obvious as could be, so I am giving the worst case examples. And, also, in one term, I had 7 college design students who could not read a ruler. No kidding. One was an international student, so for her, it was understandable. Not so for the others. I will also say this, though. I had more than a few international students and almost all were exceptional. Korede was from Africa, He won the Portfolio contest to design his class's Final Portfolio theme. He was beautiful. The entire department loved him. I forget what country he was from, but today, he speaks boldly as a Christian online. He is beautiful in every way. Multiple Chinese students, all were exceptional. One from Africa or the ME, quite proudly showed me one of their native dances. She beamed like a light bulb. She was awesome. It's now been a while, so I have lost some details. But, I will never forget this. On two final student evals, one wrote, "Jeanine for President." And the other wrote, "Jeanine, You ROCK." lol. Still makes me happy. (that was because I learned to 'say a thing,' and tie a thing to a thing.....politically...or environmentally or other.) Plus, I brought in Honors opportunity into each class and completed more Honors students than anyone on campus, ever. I served on Honors Council also. Early in that venture, my Chair came up to the classroom and pulled me out to tell me the college was looking at the numbers of my Honors Declarations, and saying, "WHAT is going on over there? The decision was made to not pay me for all of them. So when my Chair came to talk to me, I said, 1.) I didn't know I got paid a penny and don't care. 2.) The entire 2nd-half of the course was individualized 1 and 2pt perspective design projects, so all I had to require was one or two additional components to their project, Plus, the rest of the students in each class got to listen in to my constant advice, help and guidance, and see what they had missed by not declaring Honors. Too bad. So sad. So, their projects tied right into the assigned components, and each Honors student ended up with a customized final graduate portfolio with additional components, that better prepared each one for both Portfolio class and for future job interviews after graduation for graphic design positions, which are not a dime a dozen. I can't tell you much I loved teaching those college students. Loved my department, too.
Jeanine - You are a "rare gem"; you do know that I hope. You were/are a dedicated professional and you display that in all that you undertake. Your students recognized that and loved you for it. It sounds to me like the college administration (administrators??) felt "threatened" by your dedication and your popularity! IDK, that's just my perspective.
The college administration is a microcosm of the leftist academia mindset, that turns its nose up at Biblical precepts, truth as inviolate, and against America the Beautiful, They follow their own trail of America bad.. They have truly been brainwashed into 1. Christian bad, so they made up their own religion. 2. America bad so they prefer global "peace." 3. They "understand the homosexual 'viewpoint,' so they adopted it, groomed it, sanctified it, and called it "Nice. Better. Best, Equal."
Pretending to be wise, pretending to be good, they became God-hating, America-bashing, demon spirits in their own right. My friend tried to get a petition signed by campus faculty to recall the President. She Chaired the Psych Dept, the largest dept on campus. When she saw that Dr. Johnson "got" a Judge......to take the retirement of this woman who had been 'caught'? stealing campus computers, then my friend backed off in her efforts.....seeing the handwriting on the walls. Resigned her Chair position. When I initially had my 3rd and final interview with the 2nd in command Nazi, as I saw her, I saw a supremely sophisticated, player, Just as polished as a snake. And in every way, any focus on America, good, right, moral, was subjugated to world views, globalist claptrap. My only means of fighting back in the classroom was to learn to drop seed, and in one case, to deliberately allow one project to include issues in America, which, as written was NOT allowed, only "other," nations. The weight of their anti-American stances, was exemplified by one man, in one committee meeting, with faculty from various departments. He introduced himself as a Christian and what department he taught in, I thought, YAY. But then he said, "I see that I need to leave my Christian viewpoints at the door, and not bring them in to the classroom," or close to that. Boom (for me), A light lazer went through me at that one moment. I understood it was WAR and that I would not back down, but couched truth with yada yada, Perfected it, hence, those comments from students.
And bty, thank you for your comment. I could talk about the project while dropping seed, about govco, health and more.....Those who did get it, got it big time. The others, too bad so sad. Somebody has got to turn the light on in an overwhelming age of darkness. Thx again, June. The classroom was my battleground....

We all have that feeling, at one time, or another; but the feeling passes and we continue the fight.
Somethings are sorely lacking in our American History classes and, obviously, have been for a very long time!
Yes, it seems American History must be retaught and a companion course of the founding documents be taught. Each is worthy of their own class.
As corrupt teachers are this doesn't surprise me in the least!!!
