INTERESTING: Phoenix trauma surgeon faces up to 20 years in prison after police shoot him for firing warning shot at suspected prowler
On June 30, 2022, Kris Johnson, a Phoenix trauma surgeon, saw a documented gang member prowling around his front door.
Believing he was protecting his family, Johnson went outside and fired a single warning shot into the air when he saw two vehicles with bright white floodlights blocking his neighborhood entrance.
Those vehicles were unmarked Phoenix police cars.
Officers, already responding to 911 calls about the same prowler, did not identify themselves and fired nine shots at Johnson, striking him in the back and leg.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Johnson is now facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
The police contend Johnson fired multiple shots at the officers, although the bodycam does not provide that evidence.
If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 20 years in prison. Trial begins in May.
