As a journalist committed to truth informed by my on the ground reporting. I've always believed in the power of words and images to convey the story and create a dialogue around issues that often don't get attention from legacy media. Recently, I've been faced something far more sinister: direct threats of violence from individuals on the left who disagree with my reporting. And not just my reporting but my very presence on the ground.
It started with online and then in person harassment, but it's escalated to explicit calls for violence against me, both online and in real life. Comments like "she needs to be punched" or "hit her where it hurts" are common - targeted at me not just as a professional, but as a woman. In the photo below, Instagram account Gagelee calls me fair game, "The rule is always "don't hit women" I'm sorry (not) but you're a n*zi, you're fair game." Instagram account RSBlakemore, " They only really understand one thing anyway." They are working themselves up to commit violence against a woman.
This isn't debate, or concern about my presence as if I am a violent person; it's about intimidation meant to silence voices like mine. I won't be deterred, and I'll continue shining a light on the stories that matter that legacy media isn't covering.
These threats of violence are clear and frequent across several different social media platforms. Where is the Committe to Protect Journalists or Women in Journalism? I can guarantee I won't hear a peep from them about this.
If anyone wonders why I carry pepper spray and I am very vocal (now, finally!) about not letting these people get close to me, this is why.
