What started as an investigation into questionable prescription activity has led me to another side of the story — the pharmacies allegedly facilitating it.
Sources tell me some pharmacies may be operating for roughly a year, allegedly cashing out through prescription buyback schemes before shutting down and moving on.
Some sources claim certain locations are barely operating at all — allegedly open only a few hours a week, with empty shelves — yet somehow still connected to the alleged scheme.
Then there’s what happens to the drugs and the money.
Sources claim prescriptions are allegedly bought back, the people bringing them in are paid, and the remaining medications can then be sold through other channels.
Industry sources tell me this may be much bigger than a few pharmacies and could involve a well-organized network, potentially including organized crime.
And then comes the money trail.
According to sources, the proceeds from these alleged schemes are eventually moved into another industry, where the money can allegedly be cleaned and made to appear legitimate.
