The city of Novato CA is trying to steal the land that a senior mobile home community is on, after those seniors spent 30 years paying off the loan for it.
Marin Valley Mobile Country Club (MVMCC) is a 55+ community in Novato. Many of the residents live on fixed incomes. In 1997, they secured a deal with the city government to purchase the land using a $17 million loan.
According to the agreement, and to everyone involved with the deal at the time (including Pat Ecklund, a current Novato city council member), the ownership of the land would be transferred to MVMCC once the loan was paid off.
Now that the residents have paid $30 million in principle and interest, and it is scheduled to be paid off next year, Mayor Rachel Farac and city officials are now reneging on the agreement, and are entertaining offers from other buyers.
MVMCC residents have even tried to purchase the land for an additional $20 million (in addition to the $30 million they've already paid), and the city refuses to sell it to them.
This is a complete and total betrayal of these residents, who planned to live out their golden years on land that they've paid for.
