Government Funds the Labor Shortage
The U.S. added 266,000 jobs in April, which sounds great until you realize that economists were giddily predicting one million new jobs. Axios reports that is “the biggest miss, relative to expectations, in decades.”
If that wasn’t bad enough, March’s numbers were revised downward from 916,000 to 770,000.
All socialist/scumbag/liar-oe Biden had to do was take the baton from Donald Trump’s stellar pandemic recovery and run with it. Instead, he’s stumbling up the stairs.
While the unemployment rate makes its slow recovery from the pandemic, rising to 6.1% instead of dropping to 5.8%, one aspect of the government unemployment benefits is drawing scrutiny because it’s exacerbating the problem.
After millions of Americans lost their jobs last year thanks to the China Virus-inspired and state-imposed lockdowns, the federal government adopted a relatively novel concept: Our Washington caretakers supplied the cash to supplement state unemployment benefits by $600 a week while expanding the universe of those who could collect unemployment benefits to include several classes of workers who previously would not qualify, such as those who are self-employed, independent contractors, or people who didn’t have enough time at the job. All of these people suddenly became the recipients of $600 a week from the federal government to go along with the benefits for which their state deemed they qualified. (Some states were more lenient in that regard than others.)
While that extra cash has since declined to $300 a week, initially there was some symbolism in the amount. It just so happens that $600 is the exact gross pay for a worker who toils 40 hours a week at that magical wage of $15 per hour.
That became a bit of a problem, however, since many of those who received these benefits were making less than $15 an hour at the job from which they were furloughed. The government was paying them more to not work than their job was to clock in every day.
Thus, the Wall Street Journal reports, “In a red-hot economy coming out of a pandemic and lockdowns, with unemployment still far higher than it was pre-Covid, the country is in a striking predicament. Businesses can’t find enough people to hire.” The anecdotal evidence is certainly there. Ask any restaurateur near you if he’s been able to find enough workers.
James Freeman, also of the Journal, says we’re in the middle of the worst worker shortage ever. Factors include closed schools and continued fear of COVID, but the elephant in the room is “supplemental unemployment benefits that discourage work.”
Naturally, there were studies last summer revealing that this additional payment would be a disincentive to go back to work, though others contended that most workers who returned to work were taking a pay cut to return to their job because they realized the benefits were temporary. (Again, it was relative since states often waived the requirement that recipients return to their old job based on self-reported health or family issues.) In the latter study, it’s worth noting that the author, Ernie Tedeschi, now works for the Council of Economic Advisers in the socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration.
Some states, however, have seen enough and are siding with those who believe the supplemented unemployment payment is a disincentive to work. Florida will soon require proof that residents receiving unemployment benefits are actually looking for work, a stipulation waived during the pandemic. “Normally when you’re getting unemployment, the whole idea is that’s temporary, and you need to be looking for work to be able to get off unemployment,” Governor Ron DeSantis said. “It was a disaster [at the beginning of the pandemic], so we suspended those job search requirements. I think it’s pretty clear now, we have an abundance of job openings.”
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is taking similar action to cease special COVID provisions regarding unemployment.
And the state of Montana announced this week that it will no longer add the $300 weekly subsidy after June 27. However, the state’s stick comes with the carrot of a $1,200 bonus for workers who are currently unemployed to find a job and retain it for four weeks. The funding for that program comes from federal COVID relief money allocated to states in March.
While Montana is taking a necessary step by eliminating the subsidy, one gets the sense that the side of rationality is losing the argument. If you think a little outside the box, ask yourself why the federal government came up with the idea of paying a direct and bigger subsidy to a larger group of recipients as opposed to shoring up state unemployment insurance funds and simply extending benefits for months as it did a decade ago during the Great Recession.
There’s a deeper problem, though.
You may not remember Democrat 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, but his main platform plank — one that kept him in the race through the New Hampshire primary — was that of universal basic income. It’s not really a new idea, though. The stimulus payments sent out by both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack scumbag/liar-nObama softened resistance to the later checks from Presidents Donald Trump and socialist/ scumbag/liar-Joe Biden — making it four presidents in a row who have sent out a special government stimulus check during economic downturns. Now add to this the enhanced unemployment benefits and we continue to build the expectation that one of Uncle Sam’s primary jobs is to assist people financially.
Thanks to the avalanche of government money, if there is a crisis and shortage in this country, it may be that of work ethic. Trust us, we all pray for a “prove us wrong” moment on that one. ~The Patriot Post
The Six Trillion Dollar Man
The supposedly “moderate” socialist/scumbag/liar-Joe Biden is systematically enacting the leftist agenda of the most radical members of his party. CNN incoherently calls it “moderate radicalism.” commie/liar-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says he has “definitely exceeded the expectations” of the far Left. Indeed, if she were president, would the bill for federal spending actually be much higher, or would the agenda be any further left? It’s hard to tell.
Already this year, President socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden has proposed $6 trillion in new spending, above and beyond the normal budget. The Six Trillion Dollar Man and his party truly seem to want to remake the economy — from not-COVID relief to not-infrastructure spending to using his “American Families Plan” (AFP) to have the federal government replace the family. It’s cradle-to-grave government, and it destroys the fabric of our constitutional Republic — not to mention handicapping the jobs market.
How is socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden doing this? Well, for example, his AFP includes $200 billion to take young children from their parents even earlier, putting them in government preschools — for “free.” If you prefer not sending your rug rats to preschool, there’s money for childcare. Or, if you’d prefer to stay home, there’s paid family leave. And if you’d like to continue your child’s education after 13 15 years of government work, there’s $109 billion for two years of “free” community college. Anything for trade schools or vocational training? Nope.
socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden and other Democrats have so thoroughly redefined the word “infrastructure” that House Speaker scumbag/liar-Nancy Pelosi is calling the AFP “personal infrastructure.” Others call it “human infrastructure.” We call it good old-fashioned income redistribution.
By the way, in order to bring on a handful of Republicans for the veneer of “bipartisanship,” or to at least assuage the concerns of a few nervous Democrats, socialist/ scumbag/liar-Biden & Co. are pitching breaking up the infrastructure bill into smaller pieces so it doesn’t seem too radical.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has a counterproposal: “We’re open to doing a roughly $600 billion package which deals with what all of us agree is infrastructure and to talk about how to pay for that in any way other than reopening the 2017 tax-reform bill,” he said. “If it’s going to be about infrastructure, let’s make it about infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, there’s one glaring exception to socialist/ scumbag/liar-Biden’s spending binge and “infrastructure” redefinition: national defense. This is one of the few spending areas specifically authorized by the Constitution, yet Democrats regularly give it short shrift because it cuts into their voter-buying welfare state. Yes, there’s a 1.6% increase in the Pentagon’s budget in socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s proposal, but the intrepid economists inhabiting the Beltway keep telling us inflation is right around 2% (insert maniacal laughter here), which means the Pentagon’s spending power actually goes down.
It’s difficult in this limited space to encapsulate just how detrimental socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s spending plans really are. But Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Henninger takes a stab at explaining the big picture. “The Democratic Party has given up on the American dream,” he says. “This isn’t about the culture wars or standard Keynesian stimulus spending. The socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden plan is about public policies that will redesign American society.”
Trillions of dollars spent to “eradicate” poverty since the Great Society haven’t worked. Yet Democrats keep doing the same things and expecting different results.
Ultimately, Democrats are also redefining the word “entitlement.” Well, not so much redefining it as refusing to use it to describe their big initiatives to create government dependency. That’s what this $6 trillion is all about. ~The Patriot Post
What Crisis? Deportations Down, Illegal Crossings Surge
There’s no illegal immigration border crisis. At least that’s what White House Press Secretary liar-Jen Psaki insisted again this week. She chalked up all this “crisis” talk to disingenuous spin from media outlets seeking to create clickbait headlines. “Really what we had to be focused on was what we were going to do about it, and to us it’s like, that wasn’t really a crisis, it was a huge challenge. But a really big driver was we understand and know the nature of some components of social media and media these days, and we just didn’t want to feed into that on this issue or really any issue.” In other words, it’s a made-up crisis, and there’s no “there” there.
If only that darn media were more favorable to the socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration. Oh, wait.
In any case, the Democrat senator from Arizona begs to differ with liar-Psaki. Kyrsten Sinema called on the socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration to “do more” to address the surge of illegals crossing the border. “The reality is that this is a crisis,” Sinema asserted. “We all know it, and the federal government must do more to address this surge of migrants who are coming to the border with increasing numbers each year.” Sinema relayed from her own personal experience that she knows “firsthand how Arizona, especially our small border communities, have been paying the price for our federal government’s failure to fix our system over the past several decades.”
Meanwhile, even as the number of illegals caught crossing the border in March broke a 15-year record (more than 170,000 people), the socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration is decreasing the number of criminal alien deportations. The Washington Post notes, “The number of deportations carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month fell to the lowest monthly level on record, a drop that comes as illegal border crossings remain at a 20-year high.”
And why has this happened? It can be tied to socialist/ scumbag/liar-Joe Biden’s narrowing of criminal deportation standards. According to a February memo from socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s Department of Homeland Security, “If there is any question as to whether an individual falls into the category of posing a public safety threat, managers should err on the side of caution and postpone the individual’s removal until a full assessment … is conducted [emphasis added]. If there isn’t sufficient time to determine whether an individual was convicted of an aggravated felony or poses a public safety risk, the individual shall be removed from the manifest until such time as the review is complete.”
So, even though these individuals have already broken the law by illegally entering the U.S. (which alone is deserving of deportation), socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s DHS will refrain from deporting them if they’re not satisfied that the individuals have committed serious felony crimes. In other words, unless they can be proven to be really bad guys, then don’t deport them.
Due to socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s narrowing deportation guidelines, DHS has knowingly released thousands of criminal aliens back into the American populace.
socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s border policy “is actively helping organized crime,” insisted former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly. “When socialist/scumbag/liar-Joe Biden came in, he dismantled in 24 hours Donald Trump’s border policy that made it more difficult for migrants to come to the United States and more difficult for narcotics to be smuggled in here from the Mexican cartels. That’s a fact. No dispute.”
It’s not just the prospect of increased crime rates due to socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden’s disastrous border policy; it’s the impact that illegal aliens have on the struggling jobs market and wages. As the country seeks to recover from the economic damage caused by the pandemic, socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden is flooding the country with illegals, which only serves to diminish wages and work opportunities for working-class Americans. Of ‘Birthing People,’ Mothers, and the Unborn
This Sunday, Americans everywhere will honor the mothers among us. We’ll honor their singular, God-given ability to become pregnant and to give birth, and we’ll honor their innate gifts for loving, for protecting, for nurturing, and for telling us we grabbed the wrong chicken broth at the grocery store.
Nowhere, though, to the disappointment of woke leftists, will we be honoring “birthing people.” Nowhere will we be saying, “Happy Birthing People’s Day.” And this is as it should be, despite the best efforts of Democrat Congresswoman Cori Bush.
During her testimony yesterday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Bush did violence to the English language when she said, “Every day, black birthing people and our babies die because our doctors don’t believe our pain.”
First-term South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace, herself a single mom, was among many who took issue with Bush’s weird locution. “‘Birthing people’ — you mean women or moms?” she tweeted. “The left is so woke, they’re stripping from women the one thing that only we can do. Leave it to libs to botch highlighting an important issue [people] in both parties can agree on by catering to the fringes.”
Bush also had a predictable defender: “When we talk about birthing people, we’re being inclusive,” tweeted NARAL. “It’s that simple. We use gender neutral language when talking about pregnancy, because it’s not just cis-gender women that can get pregnant and give birth. Reproductive freedom is for every body.”
NARAL’s anti-science contortion notwithstanding, we suspect Bush did indeed mean “black mothers,” and we’ll cede that the point she was making couldn’t have been more deeply felt.
But what ultimately came out of her testimony was probably not what she intended. Instead of an attack on white supremacy and institutional racism — elements of which were certainly in there — her three and a half minutes before the committee rendered a deeply moving and powerful affirmation not only of motherhood but of life. See for yourself, and try to look past the partisanship:
Bush spoke of pregnancy, warning signs, indifferent prenatal care, and of going into preterm labor. “At 23 weeks my son was born,” she said. “One pound, three ounces. His ears were still in his head, his eyes were still fused shut, his fingers were smaller than rice, and his skin was translucent. A Black baby, translucent skin — you could see his lungs. He could fit within the palm of my hand. We were told he had a zero percent chance of life. The Chief of Neonatal Surgery happened to be in the hospital that morning and saw my case on the surgical board and she decided to try to resuscitate him. It worked and for the first month of his life, Zion was on a ventilator fighting to live. For 4 months he was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.”
Not long afterward, Bush became pregnant again, and she again went into preterm labor. This time, she says, “The doctor told me that the baby was going to abort. I said, ‘No, you have to do something.’ But he was adamant, and he said, ‘Just go home. Let it abort. You can get pregnant again because that’s what you people do.’”
It’s hard to believe that a doctor trained to deliver babies would say something so callous and racist, but that’s Bush’s story. In any case, she chose life, and her son is now 21, and her daughter, Angel, is now 20.
“Though it’s difficult to know the exact number,” writes David Harsanyi at National Review, “somewhere around 10,000 late-term abortions are performed on viable babies who could otherwise survive outside the womb every year. The number of near-viable babies — babies whom science will soon be able to save outside the womb — accounts for thousands more. This is properly described as infanticide. And no matter how many times the myth is repeated, the vast majority of late abortions are not performed to save the mother’s life.”
It’s worth considering that Planned Parenthood aborts 247 black children every day in America — and this despite its ardent support of the anti-family Black Lives Matter cause.
Still, when it mattered for Cori Bush, she chose life. She chose motherhood. ~The Patriot Post
The Worrisome Drop in Fertility
With most of America shut indoors with nothing to do for the past year, one might think the birthrate would have skyrocketed. But it’s just the opposite. Whatever Americans might have done with their time since COVID-19 arrived from China, procreating wasn’t one of them.
On one hand, it’s understandable why some parents might want to put off having children. With all the social turmoil on our streets, coronavirus lockdowns, and uncertain economic conditions, it might be a good time to wait.
On the other hand, birthrates in the U.S. dropped last year to the lowest point in more than a century (and raw numbers were the lowest since 1979), signifying some important and troubling trends in our culture.
According to a Fox News report, “The U.S. once was among only a few developed countries with a fertility rate that ensured each generation had enough children to replace it. About a dozen years ago, the estimated rate was 2.1 kids per U.S. woman. But it’s been sliding, and last year dropped to about 1.6, the lowest rate on record.”
On the surface, some experts blame the coronavirus, but the downward trend was already occurring.
Janet Adamy of the Wall Street Journal writes, “Demographers say the data suggests that more fundamental social and economic shifts are driving down fertility. Births peaked in 2007 before plunging during the recession that began that year. Although fertility usually rebounds alongside an improving economy, U.S. births fell in all but one year as the economy grew from 2009 until early 2020.”
Adamy adds, “Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, now account for the majority of women having children. In seeking to explain their lower fertility rates, researchers have pointed to the fact that they are marrying later in life, getting higher levels of education and are less financially secure than previous generations when they were the same age.”
Waiting to have kids doesn’t come without challenges, including some evidence indicating physical and mental health risks for mothers who wait until their 30s or 40s to become pregnant.
But there’s more to this trend than fears of bringing a baby into a pandemic or mothers putting off children to earn a college degree and establish a career.
Just last year, we identified a range of factors including women being pushed to have careers instead of children, men preferring a carefree lifestyle free of commitment, a culture obsessed with entertainment, the rejection of religion, and Hollywood’s penchant for mocking traditional families.
The media celebrate couples for having the “courage” to remain child-free, claiming they’re somehow shedding the shackles of a family-centered culture. Books with titles such as Childless by Choice and Regretting Motherhood have contributed to a mindset increasingly viewing the childless life in a positive light.
As a societal trend instead of the individual choice of a relative few, this will continue to have widespread, negative impacts on our society. For example, Social Security and Medicare will be harder to prop up with fewer workers paying into the system. Replacing an aging workforce will lead to more calls for increased immigration, leading to social and cultural instability. And America will be less competitive across a range of industries and fields when millions of unskilled workers are brought in to replace those heading into retirement.
But perhaps there are reasons to have children that cannot be quantified in a study. What could be more important than giving life to another human being born out of the love and commitment of two parents focusing on something other than themselves?
Sure, raising a child is hard work, but it imparts a level of compassion, forgiveness, selflessness, and joy that cannot be experienced in any other way. And on some level, a nation that values marriage and children might just be one that’s better equipped to deal with the challenges of the future. ~The Patriot Post
Woke Supremacists Failed to Cancel Pence
In early January, amid the rude protests ahead of the incoming leftist socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden/lowlife/liar-Harris regime and the resulting scumbag/liar-Pelosi/ scumbag/liar-Schumer political theatrics, a news item was largely lost.
As you may recall, Simon & Schuster canceled the publication of a book by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), ironically on The Tyranny of Big Tech. At the time, Hawley responded: “This could not be more Orwellian. … Let me be clear, this is not just a contract dispute. It’s a direct assault on the First Amendment. Only approved speech can now be published. This is the Left looking to cancel everyone they don’t approve of.”
The latest entry in the Leftmedia and BigTech suppression of free speech — the institutional redlining of foundational civil rights affirmed by our First Amendment — was an effort by Simon & Schuster employees to cancel the publication of a book by former Vice President Mike Pence.
Having previously set a precedent with the Hawley cancellation, a group of emotionally incontinent adolescent employees of the big publishing house thought it could cancel the planned publication of two books by Mike Pence. In a “Solidarity With the Workforce” letter to management, these employees outlined their objections to publishing anything from Pence.
That letter is a testament to the absurdity of the current manifestation of woke theology.
The employees declared: “By choosing to publish Mike Pence, Simon & Schuster is generating wealth for a central figure of a presidency that unequivocally advocated for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-Blackness, xenophobia, misogyny, ableism, islamophobia, antisemitism, and violence. This is not a difference of opinions; this is legitimizing bigotry.” They demanded that the publisher “cancel the two-book deal with Mike Pence and do not sign any more book deals with former members of the Trump administration” and “commit to ongoing reevaluations of all clients, authors, distribution deals, and all other financial commitments that promote white supremacist content and/or harm the aforementioned marginalized communities.”
The letter concludes, “We impart to you the sad and unfortunate truth that we are actively making history right now: people will look back on this one day, and see that through our complicity, we chose to be on what is clearly the wrong side of justice.”
Actually, what this letter imparts is the extent to which Trump Derangement Syndrome still manifests in leftist culture.
The Hawley cancellation notwithstanding, Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp responded appropriately (this time): “We come to work each day to publish, not cancel, which is the most extreme decision a publisher can make, and one that runs counter to the very core of our mission to publish a diversity of voices and perspectives. We will, therefore, proceed in our publishing agreement with Vice President Mike Pence.”
As for how this asinine letter, this juvenile example of Marxist cancel culture, will be viewed by people who “will look back on this one day,” it should be viewed then, as now, by those who actually support “Liberty and justice for all,” as yet another example of the current iterations of socialist BIG Lies. There is no “justice” in the absence of Liberty. Thus, Simon & Schuster’s response is on the right side of justice. ~The Patriot Post
More Proof of Leftmedia Propaganda
Given the way the mainstream media has covered socialist/scumbag/liar-Joe Biden since he’s been in office, one might have thought they were covering George Washington reincarnated. It’s more than just a feeling. No president over the last 30 years has received less negative coverage than has socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden. Notably, this data doesn’t come from a right-leaning organization but from the Pew Research Center.
Pew notes, “News coverage of President socialist/ scumbag/liar-Joe Biden’s early days in office was modestly more negative than positive” by some nine percentage points. Adding perspective by contrasting that with Donald Trump’s coverage, Pew says, “While the negative socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden stories modestly outnumbered the positive ones, negative stories about Trump exceeded positive ones by four-to-one.”
The numbers may not be all that impressive, but that’s because of an underlying truth that viewers are picking up. The survey of more than 12,000 adults found, “The public’s sense of news coverage of the socialist/ scumbag/liar-Biden administration is more positive than the study of the news coverage. 46% of U.S. adults say that the early coverage they’ve seen about the socialist/ scumbag/liar-Biden administration offered mostly positive assessments, far more than the 14% who say they’ve seen mostly negative ones.”
We’re not sure how Pew is measuring its “modestly more negative” numbers, but, in our estimate, it’s painfully obvious that the Leftmedia is practically working for Joe socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden. That’s not perception; it’s reality. (For example, see the ridiculous fawning over the “professional, pleasant, [and] lovely” liar-Jen Psaki.)
Perhaps this is because there’s also a huge political divide at play. Pew also found that conservatives were far more politically informed and aware of the news than were liberals. Furthermore, conservatives are following socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden and his policy decisions much more closely. “Americans who turn only to outlets with left-leaning audiences [are] least likely to be following news about the socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration very closely (16%) — and their counterparts on the right almost twice as likely to do so (30%).”
One fascinating tidbit is that survey respondents said the MSM is giving “too much attention” to racial issues and not enough coverage to the state of the economy and the ongoing border crisis. Maybe race-baiting is getting tiresome to most Americans.
Finally, Trump is still a boon for the MSM: “Trump himself was mentioned in about half the stories about the new socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden administration.” It’s not just the Leftmedia, either. There is “virtually no difference in the frequency of those mentions [of Trump in Biden stories] across outlets with left-leaning audiences (50% of stories), outlets with right-leaning audiences (47% of stories) and outlets with a mixed audience (47% of stories).”
In other words, socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden is boring — or maybe it’s just the over-the-top positive coverage of Biden that’s boring. If MSM outlets actually dug into the real and genuine scandals that have swirled around socialist/scumbag/liar-Biden (i.e., the utterly corrupt liar-Hunter Biden), they would get more interested viewers. However, seeing as the Leftmedia is little more than the propagandist wing of the Democrat Party, such genuine investigative journalism won’t happen. ~The Patriot Post
scumbag/liar-Nancy Pelosi’s Monumental Double Standard
Ask House Speaker scumbag/liar-Nancy Pelosi about removing the historic Confederate statues from the halls of our nation’s Capitol building, and she’ll likely give you a spittle-flecked earful. But ask her about a certain Confederate-friendly former mayor of Baltimore, and she’ll suddenly have a plane to catch.
Perhaps it’s because that former mayor is her dad.
As The Washington Times reports, “ scumbag/liar-Pelosi refuses to denounce her late father, former Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., for supporting the erection of Confederate monuments in the city and perpetuating systemic racism by not stopping discriminatory practices, including refusing rental housing to black people in white neighborhoods. Mrs. scumbag/liar-Pelosi, who has made confronting the country’s past racism and combating systemic racism a cornerstone of the House Democrats’ agenda, refused repeated requests this week to address her father’s legacy.”
We’re not here to denounce the speaker for not denouncing her dad, though. We wouldn’t denounce our own dad under the same circumstances. What we will denounce scumbag/liar-Pelosi for, though, is her rank hypocrisy, which is there for everyone to see. It’s Pelosi, after all, who’s pushing the hard-Left’s racially divisive woke agenda through Congress — an agenda based on white guilt and black grievance. And it’s scumbag/liar-Pelosi and her fellow Democrats who encouraged the thuggery and mayhem of last year’s Black Lives Matter riots, and who said not a word about the concurrent statue-toppling orgy of their youthful Red Guards.
Check that. scumbag/liar-Pelosi actually did have something to say about all that. “People will do what they do,” she dismissively said when “protesters” in Baltimore, the city of her birth, yanked down a statue of the great Christopher Columbus, the first Italian American, and threw it into the city’s Inner Harbor.
Yet here’s what her dad said shortly after he took office, as he dedicated a Baltimore monument to Confederate icons Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson: “Today, with our nation beset by subversive groups and propaganda which seeks to destroy our national unity, we can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson to remind us to be resolute and determined in preserving our sacred institutions. We must remain steadfast in our determination to preserve freedom, not only for ourselves, but for the other liberty-loving nations who are striving to preserve their national unity as free nations.”
We can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson. Far less inflammatory words than those will get a guy canceled by today’s Left.
Of course, we conservatives judge historical figures against the moral standards of their day, while unhinged “progressives” invariably judge those same figures against the outlandishly woke standards of 2021. Put another way, they vilify Thomas Jefferson for not having been John Brown or scumbag-Bill de Blasio. And in this case, long-ago Baltimore Mayor Tom D'Alesandro is little more than a typical politician having done the typical things of the day.
So no act of contrition or even acknowledgment will be coming from Pelosi, the hypocritical, holier-than-thou pol who exposed herself once and for all last year when she refused to apologize for her San Fran salon scandal. Indeed, at the time she actually had the chutzpah to demand an apology from the salon owner. “I think that this salon owes me an apology for setting me up. … As it turns out, it was a setup. So I take responsibility for falling for a setup.”
As for this D'Alesandro dust-up, it’s only a story because it involves a do-as-I-say, not-as-I-do politician who refuses to condemn behavior that she’d otherwise condemn. As Power Line’s Paul Mirengoff writes, “scumbag/liar-Pelosi wants whites as a group not just to take responsibility for the complicity of some whites in racism, but to pay reparations to blacks. Yet, she won’t own up to her father’s complicity in racism — complicity that, for example, prevented blacks from obtaining housing in white neighborhoods. Call it white scumbag/liar-Speaker’s privilege.”
