A college president is suing faculty members for arguing she plagiarized (by presenting evidence that she did). One was the VP for Research, who filed a plagiarism report as part of his job.

It's a remarkable case that you'd think would cause outcry in the academic community.Image

UMD-Eastern Shore president Heidi Anderson fired the VP after he filed the report. His evidence is specific verbatim, uncited passages. Her evidence: It's not possible I plagiarized, because we know universities have high standards, so why wouldn't they have caught me earlier?Image
The argument: no one can say an academic plagiarized unless their university already said so. It bars evidence-based argument via appeal to authority

A catch-22 when colleges refuse to investigate. Purdue granted her PhD. Its Research Integrity unit received tips, but is silent.Image
Meanwhile, a Purdue professor who was her PhD adviser 40 years ago filed an affidavit, for purposes of bankrupting other professors, swearing Anderson didn't plagiarize. But upon a close read, he *never even checked* against the specific evidence presented by the MD professors!Image
Purdue's Office of Research Integrity won't say whether it actually found her innocent, guilty, or never even checked despite receiving reports about high-profile misconduct. Even as the office's counterpart at MD is being sued based on the impression that Purdue cleared her!
Holly Mason's affidavit is arguably profoundly dishonest and immoral. And perversely, by stating that an extremely low-quality and problematic paper "met Purdue's standards," he's swearing that his own institution has incredibly low standards-all to shield an apparent plagiarist.Image
The 2nd professor being sued by Anderson has had it even worse. Anderson hired a lawyer with her $439,000 salary, then maneuvered to deprive Donna Satterlee of a pro-bono attorney. Anderson's attorney has falsely injected politics, calling Satterlee (a registered Democrat) MAGA.Image
Satterlee isn't just facing potential bankruptcy after filing an official report containing evidence of Anderson's plagiarism: She's facing jail time. She counter-sued Anderson, and was charged with trespassing when she served the papers.
Jay Perman, the chancellor of UMD, has left Anderson in her job for more than a year since he received evidence that she plagiarized, and saw that Anderson fired the school's top academic integrity official after he found it. This is the second plagiarism test he's flunked.
A paper by Darryll Pines, UMD-College Park's prez, was plagiarized. MD spent $600k on an investigation but kept it secret. It cleared him by blaming his co-author, Duke's Liming Salvino–but there's no evidence it made a referral to Duke & she hasn't taken responsibility publicly.Image
