The SPLC tried to sever its case from that of Heidi Beirich. Judge Emily Marks said no.

This delays the trial from Oct. 5 to Feb. 1.

Reminder: the SPLC faces charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy for acting like a firefighter who moonlights as an arsonist.

SPLC allegedly funded KKK activities, and then raised money by claiming to combat hate.

As I testified in Congress earlier this year, these accusations make sense because the SPLC has a long history of exaggerating hate by smearing mainstream conservative and Christian groups.

The grand jury handed down more charges last month, adding Heidi Beirich. The SPLC's former CFO was allegedly in a long-term relationship with an "informant" in a Neo-Nazi group & used clandestine SPLC funds for her lifestyle.😲

Of course, the SPLC has had more time to prepare for the trial. So the SPLC wants the trial to continue on schedule, severing the case from Beirich. Fidelity & Vanguard cut off donor-advised funds to the SPLC due to the indictment.

Prosecutors, however, argued that it doesn't make sense to have two trials, and the judge agreed. Witnesses would have to testify twice, and they could end up with conflicting verdicts.

The judge noted the SPLC faces “negative consequences,” but the consequences are not enough “to overcome the general rule that defendants charged in a common conspiracy should be tried together.”

SPLC can't get away from Beirich that easily.
