Actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a movie set and killed the cinematographer, authorities said. The director of the Western being filmed was also wounded, and authorities are investigating what happened.

Halyna Hutchins, cinematographer on the movie “Rust,” and director Joel Souza were shot Thursday on the rustic film set in the desert on the southern outskirts of Santa Fe, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s officials said.

A spokesperson for Baldwin said there was an accident on the set involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks, though a charge without a metal projectile is unlikely to kill at a moderate distance. Sheriff’s spokesman Juan Rios said detectives were investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported the 63-year-old Baldwin was seen Thursday outside the sheriff’s office in tears, but attempts to get comment from him were unsuccessful.

Hutchins, 42, was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, the sheriff's department said. Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

  • As I thought it was manslaughter... due to a whole chain of gun safety abuses that lead to the unintentional death of one person and the serious injury of another.

Baldwin should be bankrupted (civil wrongful death suit) for his arrogant abuse of the standard safety practices for using firearms on a film set.  His arrogant attitude and obvious disregard for the safety of his film crew, while on set is inexcusable and LIKELY CRIMINAL CONDUCT.  He was the producer and the ultimate authority on the set. It was his duty to ensure that the standard and normal firearms safety protocols associated with firearms props were followed... they were not... and they were in fact GROSSLY NEGLIGENT.

I would expect the local prosecutor to file the proper criminal indictment and to prosecute Baldwin... for his gross negligence, resulting in death and serious injury to his film crew.  There are other civil issues that the film industry ought to investigate and act to censure Baldwin's future in the industry.

  • And "Acting" is not "Reality." I do not defend Baldwin. However I will defend the logistics of any Business Process. All Processes have inherent dangers, some far greater than others. Have been an Accident/Fatality Inspector rest assured that at a minimum Nine Parts of The Safety Process went Wrong in order for this Fatality to happen. Requesting Actors to unload/reload cartridges in order to assure the use of "Blank Ammunition" would just cause additional exposure to accidental "Blank Discharge" against body parts. Times this, times number of actors in scenes firing weapins , times re-takes! The mist probable cause of Baldwin Set Death, during the Transfer Chain of Firearm containing Blanks, a Disgruntled Employee substituted a Live Round. The "Nine" include employee monitoring/processing/procedures, number of checks/documentation between control and actors, storage/checking procedures/access of Blanks. These are but a few, but from a Safety Stance carry over into each Department associated with creating a Film on Site.

  • I was taugh in the US Navy that you never point a gun at somebody unless you intend to SHOOT THEM!  But what can you expect with these stupid liberal actors in hollywood??

  • Too bad he didn't kill himself. Maybe he can try again.

  • Sounds like an episode from "Colombo".

  • Are you sure it was accidental?  I wouldn't believe a word Baldwin says. He pointed a gun in the direction of 2 people - only one [so far] is dead.  One of the first things I learned was you never pointed a gun at someone unless you intended to use it!

  • Fact: the man (Alec Baldwin) should never have had any sort of workable gun in his hand or any sharp object that could bring harm to anyone at any given time, the man has shown himself to be extremely unstable.  Fact: Baldwin's instability has been recognized long before trump, (so he can't blame trump for this one).  Blame Baldwin and the casting agent who put such an unstable person in the role.  I pray for the family of Halyna Hutchins who died needlessly at the hands of a maniac like Baldwin.  I also pray for Joel Souza for a rapid and full recovery.  I pray for God to rain down justice on the demons who control most of the Hollywood social elites like the crazed Baldwin.

  • Between leaving the Prop/Weapons Master and arriving "On Set" someone obviously substituted a Live Round(s) for a Blank. Now it will just come down to the reasoning of where, when and why.

    • Maybe Baldwin himself did the live round himself for revenge, or even to up his ratings?

  • President Lincoln wants say no one is above the law and no one is below the law the law is the same to all but their are some who think they are above the law. There are some who think they have the power to control freedom of speech. The fake president think he has the power to mandate the nation and Hollywood think they are untouchable
