Personally, the Pledge and National Anthem each deserve to be heard independently... I believe they each stand alone as unique to the American ethos and deserve to be heard as originally intended. But that is just my personal preference. The 'Star Spangled Banner' nearly always brings tears to my eyes... it's such a moving and glorious song. Its full impact is best attained in a solo performance.
