President Trump said Sunday he is mulling a “full pardon” for his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during an investigation into the 2016 presidential campaign.
“So now it is reported that, after destroying his life & the life of his wonderful family (and many others also), the FBI, working in conjunction with the Justice Department, has ‘lost’ the records of General Michael Flynn,” Trump posted on Twitter Sunday.
“How convenient. I am strongly considering a Full Pardon!” he added.
It was unclear what report Trump was referring to about the “lost” records.
Flynn’s lawyer, Sydney Powell, tweeted, “thank you Mr. President,” and called the “persecution” of his client an “egregious injustice.”
Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying about his conversations with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislak before Trump’s inauguration.
But in January, he filed to change his plea after switching legal teams, proclaiming, “I am innocent of this crime,” and accusing federal prosecutors of violating his rights and tricking him into accepting a plea deal.
The Justice Department has recommended that he serve six months in prison instead of probation after he balked at cooperating with prosecutors.
