There are now 23 Democrats who won't seek reelection in the 2022 midterms as Representative Albio Sires from New Jersey plans to retire and party leadership desperately grips their slim majority in the House.

'When he retires at the end of his term, our Caucus and the Congress will truly miss his tireless voice For The People,' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement Tuesday.

Sires, the Washington Post notes, is planning to officially announce his retirement after his eighth term in early 2022 and will endorse as his replacement Robert Menendez, Jr., the son of New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.

The news comes after Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard became the 22nd House Democrat to announce she won't run for reelection in next year's midterms.

'Serving my constituents in Congress has been the single most distinguished honor of my life,' she wrote on Twitter Monday. 'Over my many years of public service, I have always strived to do that which is best to help improve my community and my country.'

'After thirty years in the House of Representatives, the time has come for me to spend more time with my family,' the 80-year-old representative added. 'Therefore, I have decided not to seek reelection.'

The House is currently filled with 221 Democrats and 213 Republicans, meaning there are razor thin margins for the GOP to take back a majority and blockade Biden's agenda for the remainder of his first term.
