Security Alert– U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba March 16, 2026
Location: Cuba
Event: Nationwide blackout including Havana
At 1:54 p.m. local time, a disconnection of the national electrical grid occurred, resulting in a total power outage that includes the metropolitan area of Havana. There is no information on when electrical service will be restored.
Cuba's national electrical grid is increasingly unstable, and scheduled and unscheduled power outages are prolonged and a daily occurrence throughout the country, including Havana. The outages affect water supply, lighting, refrigeration, and communications. Take precautions by conserving fuel, water, food, and your mobile phone charge, and prepare for significant disruptions.
Actions to take:
Check daily updates posted by UNE (Unión Eléctrica) and follow UNE's social media accounts.
Tune into Radio Reloj 101.5 FM and local media for updates.
Stay in touch with family and friends.
Prepare for prolonged power outages:
Keeping mobile phones and portable battery banks charged.
Having flashlights and spare batteries in an easily accessible place.
Stocking up on non-perishable foods and water.
Preparing alternative methods to meet your medical needs (medical devices requiring electricity, medications needing refrigeration, etc.)
