The Washington Post published a short article by New York State Senator Brad Hoylman titled “Joe Biden loves his son. We should all be so lucky.” It’s a touching piece in that it exposes the reality that millions of Americans have experienced abuse of various types and degrees in the United States and across the world. The author longs for the type of unconditional love he perceives Joe Biden has for his son, Hunter.
There are many problems with this. The most glaring is that much of the sentiment expressed in the article point to pictures of the Biden father and son duo together. There was also a reference to a text message found among the leaks that showed Joe Biden saying kind and encouraging words to his son while he was in rehab. It’s as if the author, who had personal experience with abuse from his father, has painted his own picture of Joe-the-doting-father in his mind while ignoring indicators that his fathering skills were lacking.
Does Joe Biden love his son? It would seem so. But there are also indications of deep resentment from Hunter towards his father within the emails and text messages we’ve seen. One such text from Hunter to Naomi Biden reads, “I hope you all can do what I did, and pay for everything for this entire family for 30 years and it has been tough. It’s really hard but don’t worry, unlike Pop, I won’t make you give me half your salary.”
