Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar was elected to Congress in 2018 as the first Somali-American in the U.S. House, representing Minneapolis. Voters knew her as Ilhan Omar, the refugee who arrived as a child, became a citizen, and rose through local politics. Recent federal court filings, however, refer to her as:
“Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
According to sources familiar with an ongoing investigation into her immigration records, “Ilhan Omar” is not the name she was born with. Public biographical records have long listed her birth name as Ilhan (or Ilham) Abdullahi Omar, daughter of Nur Omar Mohamed.
She has stated she has no birth certificate—common for Somali refugees from the civil war era. She was married from 2009 to 2017 to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, so the name used in the court filing matches a possible married name from that period.
Federal agents searched her Washington, D.C. residence earlier this month as part of a probe into possible immigration paperwork issues. She has not been charged with a crime and has described the scrutiny as political.
The discrepancy raises straightforward questions: Which name appears on the documents used for her naturalization, voter registration, and congressional candidacy? If she has used more than one legal identity, voters who elected her under the name “Ilhan Omar” deserve clarity about the person they sent to Washington. Name variations can be ordinary; aliases used on official forms are not. Until the investigation produces a definitive public record, the gap between the name on the ballot and the name in federal filings remains unresolved.
