Is it true? Abraham Lincoln warned that America would never be destroyed from the outside. If it lost its freedoms, it would be because it destroyed itself. Will Durant said the same of great civilizations: they are not conquered from without until they have first collapsed from within.

Nations change. Empires vanish. Babylon, Assyria, and the Hittites are gone. Egypt is not the land of the pharaohs. Rome is not the Republic. Britain is not the empire. A few cultures persist in new costumes; China still concentrates power at the top. That America of 1776 is changing too should surprise no one.

Sir Alexander Tytler estimated that great civilizations last, on average, about two hundred years. The United States, at least in name, is now two hundred and fifty. The change is no longer theoretical.

A recent headline captured one slice of it: Los Angeles Democrats moving to open city elections to foreigners.

The Founders never contemplated that. They assumed a people bound by law, language, and a shared moral inheritance. James Madison put the matter plainly: the future and success of America rest not in the Constitution alone, but in the laws of God upon which that Constitution was founded.

What is happening now is not ordinary evolution. It is an attempt to keep the name “America” while emptying the thing the name once described: limited government, property, individual responsibility, and a citizenry expected to govern itself.

• Virtue is treated as optional.
• Dependence is treated as compassion.
• Fiscal restraint is treated as cruelty.
• US Constitution is treated as an inconvenience.

Danger signs are growing and the red flags of democratic fatigue is setting in.  Ask yourself, do you see what is happening?

• Replacing limited government with administrative power.
• Switching work and ownership with patronage
• Turning a common moral language with license is a different project.

It has one consistent aim: concentrated power for those who administer the new arrangement, and less for everyone else.

Empires disintegrate when the energy that created them disappears from those who inherit them. That energy was not merely wealth or armies. It was a people willing to live under law they did not write yesterday and a government they did not intend to become their parent.

Look at it this way: Half the country still wants that inheritance. Half does not. The second half is not hiding the goal. It wants a different regime and is content to trade heritage for a bowl of porridge, todays meal.

Self-destruction is not fate. Egypt, Rome, and Britain survived as something else. America can still choose heritage: citizenship that means something, government that is limited, and a people that remembers why those limits existed. But America can also choose the opposite and call the result progressive.

The question is not whether the country is changing. It is whether the change will include our national heritage or will it de-evolve into a twisted menagerie of confused privileges doled out by a government hierarchy.
