  • Without cursive writing skills, one can not read our historical documents like the US Constituiton or the many founding historical documents used to form and govern our nation.  The public will be restricted to reviewing edited documents in text...

I have real problems with that... as many of the online texts offer only edited versions of the founding documents... If one is not able to read cursive they are at the mercy of others to provide acurate edited text sources.  Not good at all.

    • That's right. I think it is planned to do exactly that. Short term goals, Medium term goals and Long term goals.

  •  Really? One can certainly thank a teacher for our predicament: failing public education in a system that pays it to teach and administer it more than any other nation. The Teacher's Union deserves a round of applause, NOT.

  • IMO: Given 79% of respondents identify as Hispanic, it is quite likely they cannot read English, so they will fail all English reading tests, so distorting the test results all around.

    • That was my thinking, wondering if illegal or even legal aliens are part of this, because many may not speak English, or speak at a low level and not read and write. They might not ever earn to read and write!

    • Steve...

Many, if not all, states offer DUAL LANGUAGE Curriculum, instruction, and exams in Spanish and several other languages, such as Arabic. There is no valid reason our children are not the best educated in the world... it is not for priority resourcing.

    • Correct, but many can't even read their native language! The schools need to test to see if a student can read anything at any level. This means the teachers have to be bi-lingual

    • How about making English the official language of the United States and demand as we used to that all those who immigrate here.....learn English!

    • JUST CONSIDERING LEGAL HISPANIC RESIDENTS; LIKE ALL CULTURES THEREIS A CERTAIN ANOUNT OF CLANNISHNESS AND DISTRUST OF "HUEROS"--WHITE AMERICANS AND OUR POLITICS. PRIDE AND STUBBORNESS ALONG WITH SPEAKING SPANISH AT HOME SLOWS THE YOUTH'S LEARNING PROCEDURE. TO IMPROVE YHIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS NEED TO EMPHASIZE FRIENDLINESS AND WELCOME AND DO BI LINGUAL CONVERSATIONS OF ANY SUBJECT MATTER THAT THEY MIGHT DISCUSS ON ANY DAY. And this type of session would not be in the formal studies curriculum. Esta es nada mas que MI OPINION--M.H.O.-----L.O.L. YES--ORIENTAL LANGUAGES MIGHT PROVE MORE DIFFICULT.........................

    • The United States has been described as a “melting pot" — where different cultures blend into a unified culture. Immigrants in the early 20th century adopted English, celebrated American holidays, and embraced Western dress and customs, often at the expense of their native languages and traditions—they assimilated and adopted our culture, not the other way around.

The host naton's culture doesn't need to be the focus for integration. the minority culture  MUST ASSIMILATE.. accept the culture and traditions of the host nation...  Our Nation has a long history of growth through immigration and until recently it was EXPECTED that the immigrant would embrace his new home and its culture...not the other way around.

America's history of assimilation is remarkable... and to be embraced... NOT RADICALLY CHANGED.  We don't need to INTEGRATE the immigrants must ASSIMILATE, they must adopt our culture, traditions, and laws to be Americans... BECOME AMERICANS... ASSIMILATE... DON'T JUST INTEGRATE.
