Just when ya think you've seen it all in Portland! I saw a lot today. Had a lousy morning, walking to catch the max I turned a corner some dude laying on the sidewalk masturbating. I had an appointment for a cat scan at 815, MAX was backed up because as far as I understand a kid on a skateboard ran into or got hit by a semi, there's a really aggressive homeless woman downtown I run into once in a while, she's very intimidating. Luckily she left me alone.
Waited an hour to get to the appointment, and another hour after to catch a MAX home, the smell of some trains leaves a lot to be desired. I won't go into detail.
Finally got back downtown and got pulled into the middle of this situation when a dude came running screaming "DO YOU HAVE NARCAN?" I don't carry it, so he screamed PLEASE CALL 911!! I looked to my right and 3 dudes were standing about 1/4 way down the block, one dude was trying to get a dude to sit up, and when he couldn't he put him on the ground and began administering CPR, he had i dose of Narcan he gave the dead man, still trying to do CPR and started trying to do sternum rubs, I was on the phone with 911 giving info, exchanging what to do, I was crying, the man was purple and gray, the dude who 1st asked for Narcan came running he found one dose, so they dosed him again with it, still, nothing, no breathing, movement, I bet it was 4 minutes by then, and I have no idea how long he was out before all the chaos. I was still trying to talk to 911, she kept telling me, "hun you're doing a great job..." I was panicked. Then another dude stopped he had 2 doses on him so they gave him both, nothing.
Paramedics and Trimet security pulled up, told me I could go.
Walked up the street bawling like a baby, got to 10th/Jefferson and around the corner was another dude on the ground overdosed. My anxiety/panic attack left me so rattled. This makes 5 or 6 dead men I've seen in my neighborhood.
Portland was the place to be, the place to work, party and play, to live, laugh and love. Harm reduction gives the addicts the tools to use, to stay so high they die.
Watching downtown fall the last 5 years has been harder than after I lost Nicole. I've never seen anything so utterly sad and unavoidable. A man-made catastrophe, a cluster-fuck, and people with the power to make change turn their backs like the lying cowards they are.
I miss my friends yet I feel so bad because I feel I haven't been a good friend, but honestly I was spent, had nothing to offer for a few years.
Life was good until 2020 then everything changed.
I wouldn't live here if I didn't have to, or if I was healthier.
This happens across the city/county every day, leadership doesn't give a damn, in office 8 months and not one of the 12 has mentioned the fetty crisis, they scream about NO MORE SWEEPS, yet they've inundated downtown with 5 shelters and a day center which inserts another 4 or 500 addicts on the streets in the downtown core, and very possible they'll add more.
Portland's a story yet to be told, filled with tragedy.
