Republican Party Just Lost The Election 2028

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday, October 16, 2026, to waive a sweeping slate of newly approved U.S. sanctions and tariffs against Russia. The restrictions were part of a legislative package—named after the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham—that Trump had signed into law just last month.

The waivers were issued only two days before the sanctions were legally scheduled to take effect

In his executive order, Trump invoked presidential authority to pause the measures, stating that the suspension is in the "national interests of the United States." The decision is directly tied to the administration's efforts to curb domestic energy inflation.

Russian Diesel Deal: The waivers follow a highly controversial deal struck the previous week, in which the U.S. agreed to import Russian diesel to lower fuel prices ahead of the upcoming November midterm elections.

Targeted Measures: The original law gave the White House broad authority to impose up to 100% tariffs on major global buyers of Russian oil and gas (such as China and India), and penalize Russian financial institutions, senior officials, and the "shadow fleet" of oil tankers.

Political Backlash and Diplomatic Fallout

The decision has ignited intense bipartisan criticism from lawmakers and triggered a sharp diplomatic rift with Ukraine.

Congressional Backlash: Lawmakers across party lines blasted the move. Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) called the decision "beyond irresponsible" and "unconscionable," while Representative Don Beyer (D-Va.) accused Trump of betraying Ukrainian partners and defying clear congressional intent.

Rift with Ukraine: Relations between Washington and Kyiv have frayed significantly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply condemned the waivers, stating the U.S. chose to "completely disregard" the sanctions. The announcement coincided with a massive Russian missile attack targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Russian Reaction: Conversely, Russian officials celebrated the move. Kirill Dmitriev, an investment envoy for Vladimir Putin, called Trump's waiver a "truly historic moment" that prevented a total halt to U.S.–Russia economic cooperation.

  • Yes, Trump did that, BUT if you read The Art Of The Deal' then he got something in return. He just can't disclose it yet. cool

  • I have mixed feelings about this. I understand trying to bring down the price of oil, but it doesn't feel right to me to do it with Russia. Maybe this is one of those times when I have to trust Trump knows what he's doing......so I pray he does!

    • I have to find a file, but Trump took away their air security to shoot down the Russian super sonic crap that flies so fast,,,,WTF, I forget what they called it, but Elon Musk said Trump has control of it.

He really messed up and the Democrats willl slam the system for 2028. Hope your children or grand children have guns, because the border will get opened again.

    • Grumpy, how many Americans are paying attendsion? Our memberss are fine tuned and are the core of the grassroots. The other 98% only know prices, jobs and entertainment. Sorry to say this, but true.

    • The border isn't going to open immediately even if the Democrats gain in numbers.
