  • Why Obama Doesn’t Like America

By:  Glenn Neal, AA, AB, JD

Where Obama spent his formative years is far more important than where he was born

In the heat of the election season, we are still spending time obsessing over whether Barrack Obama was “a natural born citizen” of the United States. I don’t wish to diminish the importance of that question; but, given the hostility of the U. S. court system to even hearing that argument, and the snails pace at which courts move, even in the best of circumstances, that argument won’t be settled until after Obama leaves office—or has what Glenn Beck calls his “Reichstag moment.”

Barrack Hussein Obama was not raised in the United States. That is a fact, undeniable and in plain view; it is well publicized, acknowledged in his autobiography, and conceded by everybody.  Yet no one seems to notice. Growing up as he did has far more profound implications for how he rules as president.

Middle childhood, roughly 6 to 8 (some say 6 -12) is a time when a child enters school; they begin to widen their circle of friends, and their interests in friends and their world increases, even as the influence of parents decreases. Psychiatrist Eric Erickson believed the years between age 6 and 10 was a critical time in the development of a child. This is the time when children either develop independence and confidence or when they develop deep-seated insecurities and inferiority.

Obama spent those years in a chaotic, Muslim Indonesia.

Children develop rapid learning at this stage, both educationally and culturally. Children, who have been learning facts and forming their relationship with the larger world since birth, really begin to understand how things fit together.

Following birth, a newborn is overwhelmed by all that new stuff that requires some action and, sometimes, storage in its memory banks. A newborn has no point of reference to determine what is important and what is not. Everything has equal value until the child learns better. With more information, and the world’s assault on its sensory organs than it could possibly digest and integrate into its memory, the newborn had to find a way to organize, prioritize, to figure out what is important and what is not. How they do that determines how the child will interact with the world for the rest of its life.

It learns that mom is extremely important because she is the food source; one certainly would want to include her and her teachings in one’s Weltanschauungthe body of ideas and beliefs that allows an individual to interpret all the incoming information and stimuli and interact with the world. Because each child’s experiences and responses are unique, every child develops its own individual view of the world.

So, for example, Uncle Seth who came to visit only once in the hospital and never shows up in the child’s life again until it is six years old, can safely be erased from the memory bank for now. In other words, through experience the child begins to build its own individual representation of the world and the things in it.  Let’s call it a “map.”

That worldview is not the real thing, at least not completely. Think of Plato’s allegory of the cave. But an individual’s worldview is that person’s reality; and reality is something filtered through that worldview so that the person knows how to relate. It allows an individual to feel confident and comfortable. With all its symbolism and distortion, it serves a useful purpose. Most of the time.

Barrack Obama was born in 1961 to an American mother and a Muslim father from Kenya. His parents divorced in 1964 when his father left to attend Harvard. Obama saw his father only once after that. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, reportedly a non-practicing Muslim and a citizen of Indonesia.

After the Second World War, Sukarno [Javanese people often use only one name] had become the first President of Indonesia; he later was stripped of most of his power and became a figurehead until he managed to seize real power again in the late 1950s. He reinstated the 1945 constitution by decree. That constitution gave the president much broader power; the communists, who Sukarno embraced and who formed a powerful faction of his power base, accepted it enthusiastically.  Although Sukarno never openly embraced Communism, Encyclopedia Britannica labeled Sukarno’s ideology “neo-Marxist, crypto-Communist.”

Indonesian President Sukarno’s recall of students studying abroad forced the Soetoro family to return to his native Indonesia. Some sources suggest Obama returned between 1966-67 when he was about 5 or 6 years old. The country was in political and economic turmoil.

Sukarno, was an intellectual and a charismatic orator—upon Obama’s inaugural as President of the United States, The Jakarta Post headlined a story, “Obama's oratory: Recalling the sway of Sukarno.”  In 1965 some in the military attempted a coup d'état, which Sukarto’s loyal army suppressed.

Nonetheless, because of Sukarto’s communist sympathies, General Suharto, who led Sukarno’s loyalists during the attempted coup, eased the president from power and Sukarno was placed under house arrest in 1968 and remained there until his death. News reports at that time suggest as many as 500,000—some estimates run as high as one million—Indonesians, particularly communists and other leftists were killed during the coup and the purge that followed. The United States supported and funded Suharto’s own coup against Sukarno.

Indonesia under Sukarno could not have been more different from America and American values. Sukarno, who was Muslim, had been a collaborator with the Japanese when they occupied Indonesia during the Second World War. Sukarto had four wives; although polygamy was legal at the time, it was not widely practiced in Indonesia.

The chaos and uncertainty certainly would not have gone unnoticed by the young Obama and, one can infer, had a profound impact influencing his worldview. It is that we should be looking at, not where he was born. His value system was formed outside the United States of America during the time when the United States was supporting the military dictatorship of General Suharto.

Obama’s years in Indonesia during this time could explain why Obama has gone to such lengths to downplay the exceptionalism of America. To him, I suspect, America is not exceptional; it was the oppressor largely responsible for Obama’s anxiety and discomfort in his formative years.

We are quick to blame a child’s environment when an otherwise normal child grows up to be dysfunctional in America. Why would Obama’s environment not have had a similar influence on how he now governs America?
