  • My thoughts are because of the cost juggling the expense of “Project Search(seehttp://reframingresources.com/2013/09/17/project-search-or-robbing-...) ,” and following mandates; there are other effective ways to provide jobs for young adults and youth in Oklahoma. I challenge you to do it the home grown OKLAHOMAN style.  I know Oklahoma has the means, talents, creativity, and intellect to do this while showing the nation how to do it up right.

Come on!  What do you say?  Are you with me?  Or, do you still want to turn to others leaving Oklahoma at the bottom of the list as usual?  Have faith in you state.  Give young teens and adults a role model of can do not follow the leader mentality attitude!

My intent is to spread resources for parents, teachers and all that work with these groups of kids to lower frustrations. Making headway faster is an acceptable goal.

Let this poem explain some of my expectations and desires.

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OKLAHOMA WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE

    OKLAHOMA A LITTLE LIGHT.

    WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE.

WHY DO WE LET HER BE SLIGHTED?

BE PROUD WE HAVE LOTS TO SHOW OFF! WE ARE STOUT.

FOR ALL OUR CITIZENS WILL NOT BE LEFT OUT

WORKING TO FIND JOBS FOR ALL WE’LL THROW AROUND OUR CLOUT.

    DIVERSITY IS THE KEY

WHAT WE ARE WE WILL BE

STANDING BOLD AND MOLDING THESE TALENTS

INTO MARKETABLE SELLING SKILLS IS THE BALANCE

EMPLOYMENT OR OWNERS OF OUR OWN BUSINESS

    STANDING OUT THROUGH MARKETING

HARKEN TO THYSELF WITH THE QUICKNESS

OF MENTAL SHARPNESS TO DO THE TARGETING

    OKLAHOMA HAS THE TALENT BASE

OF COURSE I KNOW THIS IS THE CASE

NO LONGER MUST WE BE SLIGHTED

NO LONGER MUST WE BE BEHIND

    COME JOIN ME

    PUT OKLAHOMA ON THE TOP

    DISABILITY OR NOT

    OKLAHOMA IS QUITE HOT

    THIS LITTLE LIGHT OKLAHOMA

    WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE

NO NEED FOR US BE BEHIND

OKLAHOMA IS NO LONGER IN A COMA

    THIS LITTLE LIGHT OKLAHOMA

    WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE

NO LONGER NEED FOR US BE BEHIND

JOIN ME SINGING OKLAHOMA BE ON TOP.

    KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

    OKLAHOMA AT OUR HEART

    WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE

NO NEED TO GO LOOKIN OUTSIDE

    THIS LITTLE LIGHT OKLAHOMA

    WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE

    DIG WITHIN THE STATE

    AND WE WILL BE GREAT

Resources that talk about the supports needed for young people with specific challenges to meet will be mentioned or cited.  Jobs from O*det will be looked at that with skills fit some of these challenges better head on.  Ever heard of “Designer Employment?” It is like Designer clothes; a fit for each person.   Meaning  a fit is found for each unique individual.

EARN is another network of programs that works with or has expertise in helping set up the disabled obtain employment or set up their own business.  Project Elizabeth is a program set up by Bender Consultants. Bender has a contract with the United States Government to hire disabled in professional positions.  The owner is disabled.  A one time fee to work with her on a program for Oklahomans make sense.  She has the passion of caring for her company and people like her; showing this by being a success at what she does.

Express Personnel is a homegrown national chain.  Why lands sakes!  It comes straight from the Canadian County where I live in Yukon; the outskirts of Oklahoma City.    That makes the owner have access to the central part of Oklahoma and the Capitol where most state agencies locate their main offices in Oklahoma City.  Lisa Graven, the Head of Workforce at Employment Security would be a wonderful addition to a team to come up with a new model. Working better and smarter by calling in the Top Guns is a logical choice   I will talk about programs many know little or have never heard about but there is a plethora of information if you have the time to look at and mull over.

If anybody thinks Oklahoma is lacking in the talent or ability to do this? Please explain to me in the comments after this article. Tell me why you think this or that paying the higher salary is better with “Project Search?”  Another program, “AddUSIN,” was started here in some counties of Oklahoma through workforce and a grant. This program is effective.  It combines another member on the team to be a case worker, coach and cheerleader of motivation for these teens and young adults.

Challenges faced by owning a business can be overcome by having a business manger hired to run the finances.  Express Personnel might do the direct hire and start a program where this could be run for years.  Outsourcing this seems to me a excellent  idea.  Allowing the kids(know not proper english but my terminology) to do what they love; when this happens businesses prospers.  One way to explain it is to have a Trust Fund with administrators watching over the funds. Below a few ideas I seem to believe I know would fly:

Dog Grooming, Pet sitting, Animal Care such as Daycare for pets, Partnering

with younger kids on the Spectrum to guide and share how got through tough times,  4H programs to train and help sponsor training care of animals & more.

Art Galleries to showcase work done by those on the spectrum, one such group in Oklahoma is BEESKNEEShttp://beeskneesart.com/ (QUITE SUCCESSFUL  PROGRAM letting kids express themselves through their art). Help them own  their own shops.  EARN had grants to do this at one time

Ways to find and dig for talents and help these kids learn to express their plus side and sell themselves.  Marketing 101.

Working one on one with all involved to decrease what I see as a blame game.  Example is using what is available.  Check movie APOLLO 13 all that was on the  modules to get them home  Best ways practices to do this. Quit spending such a high volume dollar amount on a high number of groups teaching parents to

write IEP’S.  Get real about getting together.  Invite teachers via unions instead

of through the Education department only.

Get real about doing things as a business. Obtain teachers email lists from Oklahoma Department of Education! Groups charged with informing parents and  do so by advertising free. Take a lesson from Putnam City on this or interview   Glen Kastner because he did it for free. Ask me I know ways to do this.

Realize  that finite resources are at the core of all problems.  This is creativity comes in and Oklahoma can do kicks in to play.

If the schools are out of money how do you think we can squeeze more money out of them?  How about asking the Disability Law Center to do more than sing the mantra get it in the IEP?

Civil discourse on ideas like businesses that are innovative do things like this.  Retreats to get juices going. Round table meetings where you invite people. Use a marketing firm.  Get with the ages of modern times.

Below I am going to list a number of resources and information to consider when coming up with a program model.

Summing up my approach to an alternative to Project Search; I say turn to Oklahoma businesses.  My first approach would be to knock on Express Personnel’s door.  Next I would see if we could get the owner of Bender Consultant’s to come to a POWWOW and everyone else involved to sit down to talk.  A power point presentation to summarize material presented here and other resources would be shown.  Before the meeting a notebook prepared with materials for reading should be sent.  Included would be a total budget of all groups with an in depth look at costs associated with improvements.

The outcome could be a model to be showcased to the nation.  Why import Project Search?  I was told the successful definition of employment was defined by the legislature.  Okay fine! The fees established by Project Search for placement of a teen in a job ($750) and completion of the 90 days payment ($1500) is not.  That is a set fee by Project Search.

How about getting the representatives to redefine successful employment as 6 months to a year. Plus, fees are not paid until a year of employment in a job that has decent benefits?   I know like in the poem above, “THIS LITTLE LIGHT OKLAHOMA WE CAN MAKE IT SHINE;” WE CAN DO BETTER FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND OTHER DISABLED IN HELPING THEM FIND EMPLOYMENT!!
