THIS QUIET SURRENDER

when the cower of orphan threat quiets the meek of men
where the graves are swarmed by determined rats and homeless mice
how the towns and cities vanish spirit without a whimper;
the silence of guns their masters gave them that
they surrendered without a shot or shout
empty now the chambers rust
as freedom turns into scattered rot and dust
not much effort or crumbs of courage was given to keep it whole and firm
easier to turn the well fed cheek where their is no pride to keep

as security and safety are found in this heaven's trepid sleep;

these under berated masses are not enough whom insulted themselves into sulky driven sheep
