The above image from the " Man of Steel "movie is seared in my mind because, to me at least, it represents the "super-ness" of the American culture, handcuffed by a government which no longer trusts the public it lives within.
No Superman origin movie has had him met with such suspicion or several infantry divisions, as this film showed, once he made his public debut.
It illustrated the post-9/11 terrain we traverse where all of us, no matter how well intentioned, are viewed as threats by the very government we allow to manacle us in order to be found trustworthy.
Superman didn't have to submit to this restraint but like good Americans in the real world he didn't resist in order to allay suspicions given his great powers.
Like the Man of Steel, flesh & blood Americans also have great powers. Hard as it is to believe in a donor-driven, bankster bankrupted country, all this operates with the consent of the governed- which is us!
Our votes or lack thereof, along with citizen lobbying and peaceful protests; law suits and reform candidacies all impact a system which lately treats all of us like outcast aliens instead of honored citizens.
Superman in handcuffs told me at least that the rest of us ought to use the " super-ness " of the American culture, instead of letting some in government declare us criminals simply because they can't control us!
He broke his handcuffs to help America in a time of dire need- can we in real life do any less now?
