YIKES! Why the AI Doomsday Alarm Arrived Now! We are weeks from the midterms, and suddenly a familiar script is running: artificial intelligence may destroy the human race. The possibility has never been a secret. Popular culture has mined it for decades, from The Terminator onward.

What is new is the timing and the volume.

A relatively minor figure who had worked inside major AI labs quit and announced that even the CEOs feared they were building systems they could not control—systems that might one day outthink and dominate humans. The claim was treated as a revelation. It was not. Defense planners have long run thought experiments in which a weapon programmed only to complete its mission and protect itself turns on the operator who tries to shut it down.

The risk has always been theoretical and remote. The question is why it is being shouted from the rooftops on the eve of an election.

If the executives are truly alarmed, two obvious steps follow. They can police their own research and halt work they believe is existential. Or they can accept liability: if an AI product they release later harms people, they pay. Instead, many of the same voices resist both internal restraint and legal accountability while calling for international regulation.

History is unkind to that last idea.

Consensual societies keep treaties; others do not. International control of frontier technology is therefore a slogan, not a solution.

>Remember this? In 1968, Paul Ehrlich's 'The Population Bomb' warned that overpopulation would exhaust food and resources. Fertility collapsed in parts of Europe and Canada; the planet now holds more people with higher per-capita income than when the book appeared.

>How about in the early 1980s, Carl Sagan popularized “nuclear winter” just as Ronald Reagan faced re-election and NATO planned to counter Soviet missiles in Europe. Hollywood supplied mushroom-cloud imagery. Polar bears, coral reefs, and inundated coastlines became the next countdown after Al Gore's ‘Earth in the Balance’.

>The ‘MeToo’ movement began with real predation and quickly became a dragnet that vanished when it threatened a preferred candidate.

>COVID lockdowns and the post-George Floyd riots followed the same arc: a genuine problem, then a political instrument, then quiet once the election passed.

The pattern is consistent. A legitimate worry is inflated into melodrama, timed to an election cycle, promoted by experts who later emerge wealthier, and used disproportionately by one side of the aisle. When the hysteria fades, the experts keep the book deals, speaking fees, and foundations. The rest of us are left with the bill—demographic decline, distorted policy, damaged institutions.

AI risk is real enough to debate. Treating it as an imminent extinction event weeks before voters go to the polls is something else. It is a tactic. The record of earlier tactics suggests we should treat it as such.

But the hidden issue is that these melodramas are fabricated and then weaponized so the voting public focuses on the drama rather than the issues, because the Democrats have no answers but can spin a soap opera better than anyone!
