In a controversial revelation, internal documents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suggest supporters of former President Donald Trump, military personnel, and religious individuals are considered higher risks for domestic terrorism. This conclusion, drawn by the now-disbanded Homeland Intelligence Experts Group, has sparked outrage and accusations of political bias.

According to files obtained by America First Legal (AFL), the DHS advisory board posited "most of the Domestic Terrorism threat" in the U.S. stems from Trump supporters. The documents also highlighted individuals with military backgrounds or religious beliefs could be indicators of extremism and terrorism. These findings have ignited a fierce debate over the objectivity and fairness of the DHS's assessments.

The advisory board, established in September 2023, was composed of various experts, including former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan. Both Clapper and Brennan had previously signed a controversial letter dismissing the authenticity of Hunter Biden's laptop as Russian disinformation in October 2020.

Meeting notes from the board indicated a strong political context, suggesting that attacks on government institutions over the past six years have predominantly come from Trump supporters. This assertion has led to criticism the board's conclusions were influenced by political motivations rather than objective analysis.

 The board's recommendations to increase scrutiny of military personnel and religious individuals as potential extremists have also raised concerns. "If you ask researchers to dive into indicators of extremists and terrorism, they might indicate being in the military or religious," the board's notes read. "This being identified as an indicator suggests we should be more worried about those. We need the space to talk about it honestly."

The release of these documents is part of AFL's "DeepStateDiaries," a series of disclosures intended to expose what the organization describes as partisan activities within the federal government. AFL Executive Director Gene Hamilton criticized the board's apparent bias, stating, "These shocking records reveal apparent unabashed partisanship on this Deep State committee. All efforts to weaponize the federal government against political opponents of the ruling regime should be stopped."

AFL President Stephen Miller echoed these sentiments, asserting the documents reveal a plan to use government power against Trump supporters in the run-up to the election. He described the findings as indicative of a broader strategy to target political adversaries. 

The board's discussions also included strategies to enhance community-level information gathering. They suggested previous campaigns, like the post-9/11 "See Something, Say Something" initiative, were ineffective due to Americans' reluctance to report on each other. The board emphasized the need for a more effective national campaign to encourage community members to report suspicious activities.

 "The security of the American people depends on our capacity to collect, generate, and disseminate actionable intelligence to our federal, state, local, territorial, tribal, campus, and private sector partners," stated DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas when announcing the board.

However, following a successful lawsuit by AFL on behalf of former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell, the Biden administration decided to disband the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. This move was seen by some as a necessary step to ensure federal intelligence efforts remain unbiased and focused on genuine threats.
