Follow-Up Article— You are not going to believe this! A woman with a major criminal past has been elected to public office in Maine, drawing both support and criticism after securing a seat on Tuesday night.
Angela Walker, who served time for manslaughter more than two decades ago, was among four candidates elected to the council. Her victory comes more than 20 years after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter and perjury in connection with the 2002 death of Derek Rogers, a Canadian tourist.

According to past reports, the incident occurred after a confrontation in which Rogers allegedly used a racial slur directed at Walker, who is Native American. Rogers was later found beaten and suffocated with sand.
Walker and her brother both pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Walker, who ran with the endorsement of a progressive advocacy group will now serve a three-year term on the city council.
Her election sparked strong reactions online, with critics and conservative commentators questioning the decision of the voters. Social media accounts such as Libs of TikTok shared details of Walker’s past to millions of followers, while public figures including Sen. Ted Cruz and others weighed in with sharp criticism.
Supporters, however, point to Walker’s long record of rehabilitation and community involvement since her release. Speaking to the Bangor Daily News, Walker said she hopes voters will see her as someone who has turned her life around.
“That’s my past,” she said. “I don’t live there anymore. I’m a different person, and I want people to see that it’s possible to change.”
Walker’s election follows other recent controversies involving candidates with troubled histories, fueling broader debate about accountability, and who is fit to serve in public office.
