The World Health Organization said in a statement that a vaccination strategy based on repeated booster doses of the original COVID-19 vaccines is unlikely to be appropriate or sustainable.
Recognizing the inability of the shots to stop the spread, the U.N. health agency said future vaccines against COVID-19 must "be more effective in protection against infection thus lowering community transmission."
"It's over, people," was the response from Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter who has devoted his independent reporting to the pandemic, publishing several books on the subject.
"Aside from a few unlucky Israelis, no one is going to receive a fourth dose of the original vaccine; everyone with eyes can see it doesn’t work against Omicron," he wrote on his Substack page.
Separately, on Wednesday, the WHO said vaccination status should not be used to disqualify people from traveling internationally, advising governments to implement vaccine mandates only as a "last resort."
On Tuesday, the European Union's top health agency warned that getting boosted every four months could harm the immune system's ability to fight off the disease. The European Medicines Agency advised countries instead to mirror the seasonal influenza vaccination strategy tied to the onset of the cold season.
Berenson said a third does would be, at most, "weeks of marginally improved protection" from "potentially severe side effects."
But COVID has proved to be "faster than the scientists," and even the mRNA vaccines take too long to be developed.
The WHO's remarks about vaccine mandates comments came in response to questions from the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers about Australia's ban of top tennis player Novak Djokovic because he is unvaccinated.
Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO's Health Emergencies Program, said vaccine mandates should be used "as a last resort ... in the face of a large epidemic."
"So yes, there are circumstances in which vaccine mandates are supported by WHO, but, again, it is subjected to the basic principle that the best way to get people vaccinated is to inform them, to educate, to have a dialogue and to address people’s genuine concerns," he said.
Ryan said the WHO always asks "that those mandates be clear, be explicit, be time-limited and at the same time ... governments continue to explain to people why they’re doing things and continue to try and convince people of the benefits of vaccine rather than reverting to mandates as a single approach."
Katherine O’Brien, director of WHO's Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals, said no one should be denied access to international travel based on their vaccination status.
She argued that not everyone in the world has the same access to vaccines.
"Free and full access to safe and effective vaccines is the absolute precondition before a mandate is made and that is a grounding principle," she said.

Two Omicron Studies Are Fantastic News That Should End Mandates and Restrictions!-Posted on PJ Media-By Stacey Lennox-On January 15, 2022:
A recent study from South Africa (currently in preprint) attempts to explain why the omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic caused less severe illness and death than prior waves of other variants. To complete the study, researchers compared the outcomes of 5,144 patients from the fourth wave, where omicron was prevalent, to the outcomes of 11,609 patients from prior waves. They looked at deaths, severe hospitalizations, and all hospitalizations in the 14 days after diagnosis for people aged 20 and older.
The study controlled for vaccination, prior infection, comorbidities, age, and sex. The team concluded:
In the Omicron-driven wave, severe COVID-19 outcomes were reduced mostly due to protection conferred by prior infection and/or vaccination, but intrinsically reduced virulence may account for an approximately 25% reduced risk of severe hospitalization or death compared to Delta.
Their assessment is hopeful for several reasons. First, the risk from COVID has always been age-stratified, with a well-known set of comorbid conditions that increase the risk of severe illness and death. A 25% reduction in risk inherent to the virus itself reduces the risk to everyone. People who are recovered, vaccinated, unvaccinated, and those with risk factors would all face a less lethal virus.
For those under 50 who are otherwise healthy, the risk of severe illness and death was already vanishingly small. The seasonal flu’s generally quoted infection fatality rate (IFR) is 0.1%. According to Dr. Fauci, a pandemic flu may reach 0.2 or 0.3%. In a study that remains in preprint from Cathrine Axfors and Dr. John P.A. Ioannidis from Stanford, the age-adjusted IFR for COVID-19 in July 2021 was below the seasonal flu in every age group below 50.
Applying the 25% reduction in severity estimated in the South African study, and even the IFR for those between 50 and 59, and omicron looks more like a severe flu season.
Other estimates for the reduction in hospitalizations and death with omicron show even more significant reductions in severe disease. A CDC-funded preprint study from Kaiser Permanente studied over 50,000 patients who tested positive for omicron and more than 16,000 sick with delta between Nov. 30, 2021, and Jan. 1, 2022. Among cases first detected in outpatient settings, the analysis found:
- Patients with omicron variant infections were roughly half as likely to have symptomatic hospital admissions.
- The rate of ICU admissions after a positive outpatient test for omicron was 25% the rate for delta infections.
- There was one death from omicron compared to 14 with delta during the study period, resulting in a 91% reduction in the risk of death.
- Zero cases of omicron variant infection received mechanical ventilation, compared to 11 patients with delta variant infections, throughout follow-up.
- The median duration of hospital stay was 3.4 (2.8-4.1) days shorter for hospitalized cases with omicron variant infections than hospitalized patients with delta variant infections. This is nearly a 70% reduction in the average length of stay.
The study also found no significant difference in risk of contracting symptomatic omicron between individuals who had recovered from prior COVID infection and those who had received vaccines, including boosters. It also noted a reduction in severity for the unvaccinated without a documented previous infection:
Reductions in disease severity associated with Omicron variant infections were evident among both vaccinated and unvaccinated patients, and among those with or without documented prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Prior vaccination against COVID-19 was associated with a dose-dependent lower risk of detection of the Delta variant as compared to the Omicron variant; likewise, Delta variant infections were less commonly detected among cases with documented prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.
When the 90% reduction in deaths in this study is applied to the IFR calculated in July, all age groups fall below the generally cited IFR for the seasonal flu.
The new information should put an immediate hold on vaccine passports and vaccine mandates for children and healthcare workers until we know more. No one would consider mandates for seasonal colds and flu with a vaccine that does not prevent transmission or symptomatic illness. And the data from Kaiser appears to attribute the reduction in IFR to the decreased virulence of omicron at least as much to prior immunity from vaccines or natural infection. The study found a similar reduction in severity of omicron for both the vaccine and COVID naive.
Omicron is looking like the game-changer many experts predicted it would be based on initial data from South Africa. It is time our public health and political leaders start acting like it is. Ending the mandates and emergency powers would be a great start.

'Good News': mRNA Scientist Says Omicron Looks Like Something Vaccinologist Would Design on Purpose!-Posted on The Western Journal-By Patriot Project-On January 5, 2022:
Vaccine scientist Dr. Robert Malone believes there is some very good news emerging from the rapid spread of the coronavirus, suggesting that God may have given the world a “Christmas present” in the form of the omicron variant.
Malone helped invent the mRNA technology used in the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
Appearing on the Fox News program “The Ingraham Angle,” he said omicron may well do what vaccines have not been able to fully accomplish to date: provide strong immunity.
“Omicron blows right through the vaccines and through the triple jab,” Malone said, referring to the two-round initial shots and the booster. “Omicron is very, very infectious and the data are already in that both the double and triple vaccination is not protecting you from omicron.
“Now, here’s the good news,” he continued. “The number of deaths from omicron worldwide is less than 10 to my last count.”
“If you believe in a God, this looks an awful lot like a Christmas present,” Malone said, pointing out that rather than going into the deep lungs as delta and other variants do, which can lead to serious illness, omicron has shifted to the upper airway, indicating that the virus is weakening.

“So the good news with omicron is very low disease, highly infectious. It looks an awful lot to the experienced vaccinologist like a live-attenuated virus vaccine that you might design for purpose,” he contended. “This is about as good as we could possibly want right now in terms of outcomes.”
Appearing again on the “Ingraham Angle” on Monday night, Malone explained just how infectious the omicron variant is.
“The thing is with omicron, it has a reproductive coefficient — now that’s fancy medical epidemiology talk — but it has a reproductive coefficient with a measure of infectiveness that’s in the range of measles. It’s in the seven to 10 range.”
In other words, one infected person will on average spread it to seven to 10 more people. Malone said on Joe Rogan’s podcast last week that, by comparison, the average rate of transmission for the delta variant was five to six people.
“We’re all going to get infected,” Malone told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “Probably the only ones that won’t have some degree of symptoms from this in the United States are going to be the ones that have natural immunity. Still, a fraction of those are going to get infected.”
Malone’s observation about the infectiousness of omicron appears to be playing out in the U.S.
The New York Times tracker shows the number of COVID-19 cases topped 1 million on Monday for the first time since the pandemic began. The highest daily total during the previous nationwide spike in January 2021 was approximately 250,000.
However, Reuters noted last week that COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations in the U.S. are “comparatively” low even as omicron surges. Additionally, The New York Times reported that the omicron wave passed quickly through South Africa with no huge spike in deaths.
A study out of South Africa showed patients admitted to hospitals during the country’s omicron-dominant fourth wave of COVID-19 were 73 percent less likely to have severe disease than patients admitted during the delta-dominant third wave.
In the U.S., Bloomberg reported, “a string of new studies has confirmed the silver lining of the omicron variant: Even as case numbers soar to records, the numbers of severe cases and hospitalizations have not.”
Monica Gandhi, an immunologist at the University of California, San Francisco, told Bloomberg, “I hope this variant creates profound immunity in the population.”
“It will hopefully end the pandemic.”
