One of Ramadan’s accusers, a partially disabled woman who requires a crutch to walk, reportedly claims he raped and sexually assaulted her at a hotel room in the French city of Lyon in 2009.
Ramadan’s other accuser likewise claims he raped her in a Paris hotel in 2012. She reportedly told French media outlets that Ramadan had invited her to his hotel for a talk, but that once she arrived, he “literally pounced on” her “like a wild animal.”
This brings us to this past week, when the judge presiding over Ramadam’s case declined his request for bail, saying he wanted “to prevent any pressure on witnesses and victims,” as reported by CNS News.
As of Saturday, Feb. 10, Ramadan therefore remains behind bars in France, thousands of miles away from the United States, no thanks to the efforts of sexual abuse enabler Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Let’s be clear here: When Clinton reversed the Bush administration’s ban on Ramadan in 2010, she gave this monster an opportunity to sidle into the United States and hurt women just like those in France.
Moreover, given Clinton’s proven habit of automatically dismissing the complaints of women who’ve allegedly been sexually harassed and/or abused, one can’t help but wonder whether her decision to unban Ramadan was really motivated by a desire to pursue “a new relationship with Muslim communities.”
Was that really the reason, or was it rather because she has a special place in her heart for sexual abusers like Tariq Ramadan and, wouldn’t you know it, her own husband, former President Bill Clinton?

Well, if the Nunes memo was an eye opener, the Grassley/rino-Graham memo blows it out of the water. The Nunes memo asserted that the FBI used the fraudulent Steele dossier to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Carter Page. The original and successive FISA warrant applications did not reveal the involvement of the DNC and the liar-Clinton campaign’s funding of the Steele dossier to the FISA court. These applications were knowingly fraudulent – and were signed off on by no less than; then-FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, then-Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. { townhall.com } ~ We remain embroiled in a debate over the nature and extent of our own government's spying on us. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which was enacted in 1978 as a response to the unlawful government spying of the Watergate era, was a lawful means for the government to engage in foreign surveillance on U.S. soil, but it has morphed into unchecked government spying on ordinary Americans.
The journey that domestic spying has taken in 40 years has been one long steady march of massive increase in size and scope. The federal government now employs more than 60,000 people to spy on all Americans, including the White House, the Pentagon, the federal courts and one another. As well, the National Security Agency and the intelligence arm of the FBI have 24/7 access to the computers of all telecoms and computer service providers in the U.S. And certain politicians have access to whatever the NSA and the FBI possess.
Last week, we witnessed a new turn as politicians engaged in cherry-picking snippets from classified raw intelligence data that support their political cases -- pro-Trump and anti-Trump.
Raw intelligence data consists of digital versions of telephone conversations and copies of text messages, emails and other communications, as well as fiber-optic internet traffic legal, medical and banking records, for example and secret testimony and briefings intended only for the eyes and ears of those who possess a security clearance.

The Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee fired the first salvo by releasing a memo derived from classified raw intelligence, which they claimed would show a conspiracy in the liar-nObama Department of Justice, including the FBI, to spy on Donald Trump's campaign and pass along the fruits of that spying to the Democrats. The issue they chose to highlight is the DOJ application to a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge for surveillance on Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to candidate Trump who once boasted that he also advised the Kremlin.
The memo's authors wrote about intelligence data they did not personally see; they selectively extracted and purported to summarize raw intelligence data but quoted none of it verbatim; they intentionally sat on their conclusions that the feds regularly have abused FISA authorities throughout the congressional debate to expand FISA; and a principal drafter of the memo -- Rep. Trey Gowdy -- advises that the raw data he saw and the memo he wrote have nothing to do with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of the president.
The Republican memo also reveals that former MI6 agent Christopher Steele, the author of the dossier that accuses Trump of pre-presidential money laundering and grossly inappropriate personal behavior but has many parts that have not been publicly verified, was a "longtime FBI source," and a summary of his work was part of the DOJ's application for continued surveillance of Page.
That quoted phrase is today a major headache for the DOJ, as the American and British governments, which regularly share intelligence and occasionally spy for each other, have agreed not to recruit the services of each other's agents. But the FBI obviously recruited Steele. If Steele was an FBI asset while still a British spy -- if he was spying for the FBI and MI6 at the same time -- he may be exposed to a criminal prosecution in Britain.
The Democrats on the committee have written their own memo, which the committee voted unanimously to release. It will be up to the president to permit or bar its full or partial release. The Democrats claim that their memo will show that the DOJ was candid and truthful when it sought a FISA surveillance warrant on Page and that the application for the renewal included far more than Steele's tainted work.
Why should anyone care about these political games?
The loss of liberty rarely comes about overnight or in one stroke. In a democracy, that loss is normally a slow process, often pushed along by well-intentioned folks who do not even realize until it is too late that they have created a monster. FISA is a monster. It began as a means of surveilling foreign agents in the U.S., and today it is used for surveilling any American at any time.
If you call a bookstore in Florence from a telephone in New Jersey, the government's computers will be alerted. A federal agent will download the digital copy of your conversation, even though it was only about ordering a book. Then that communication may be used to justify surveillance of you whenever you talk to anyone else, in the U.S. or in any foreign country.
This is blatantly unconstitutional, and it is often fruitless. And we know it can happen to anyone.
The Supreme Court has ruled that electronic surveillance constitutes a search under the Fourth Amendment. That amendment prohibits warrantless searches and requires probable cause of crime as the sole trigger for judges to sign search warrants. FISA only requires probable cause relating to a foreign agent on one end of a phone call -- a far lower standard -- to trigger a warrant. The government has convinced the FISC that it should grant warrants based on probable cause of talking to someone who has ever spoken to a foreign person, whether an agent of a foreign government or an innocent foreign bookseller.
That judicially created standard is so far afield from the Fourth Amendment as to render it legally erroneous and profoundly unconstitutional. Yet the FISA expansion that the president signed into law last month -- after the debate during which House Intelligence Committee Republicans intentionally remained mute about their allegations of FISA abuses -- purports to make this Stasi-like level of surveillance lawful.
The political use of intelligence data makes the owner of the data a serious threat to personal liberty, and it renders his instruments monstrous.

It’s 2018, and horrifying footage has emerged of African people being sold at auction at Libyan open-air slave markets. Tens of thousands of defenseless African migrants and refugees risk everything to reach Libya’s coast and next across the Mediterranean into Europe – which is considered to be the most dangerous route on Earth. According to reports, the migrants who end up in business detention centers are sold off like goods.
Libya has become a modern-day slave market, keeping migrants at the mercy of a complex trafficking web tolerated by the country’s many militia groups, an issue largely ignored by the world, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer said on Wednesday. Narciso Contreras, who spoke to migrants kept as slaves during a documentary photography project in Libya, said global attention focused on the North African country as a gateway for migrants attempting to reach Europe by sea.
As Leonard Doyle from the International Organization for Migration tells Counting the Cost: “As shocking as it seems, it’s indeed true. The reason slave trade is happening is that there is really no rule of law across much of Libya. Libya is a country as big as France, with a lot of space there. Migrants are coming there … they see the promise of a new life when they go to their Facebook feed, and they think something wonderful is waiting for them in Europe because a smuggler has abused the system and has sold them that lie.”
Doyle explains that when the people arrive in Libya, “they get off the bus and they are quickly put into a kind of murder machine, an extortion machine. They are robbed of their possessions, their families are called. They are forced, they are tortured, they give them money. And then they are sold. Unbelievable, but they are sold in open, public auctions: $400 for a laboring man, maybe a bit more for a woman who can be put in the sex trade. And this is what’s happening across the country.”
He also stresses that this issue demonstrates that the international community has to pay more attention to post-Gaddafi Libya. He adds: “Modern-day slavery is widespread around the world and Libya is by no means unique. It’s happening in the developed countries of the world as well as the undeveloped countries. But what’s particularly shocking is that this is happening effectively in the open, where people can go to a farmhouse, place a bid and end up ‘owning’ a human being.”

For months and months, our fake news media have been
freaking out over a meeting Donald Trump Jr. took with a
Russian lawyer in the hopes of getting some dirt on Hillary
Clinton. Again and again, we have been told that this is the
smoking gun of collusion between the Trump campaign and the
Russian government. Of course, that is nonsense. Moreover,
Don Jr. and the others in attendance caught on to the scheme
within a few minutes, and as far as we now know, that was the end of that.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of others, who actually have colluded with the Russians as a means to dig up dirt on Trump.
Here are seven American politicians and institutions who have or are at least suspected of colluding with the Russians as a means to destroy President Trump.
The CIA
Although the far-left New York Times is desperately hoping to control the explosion of this bombshell by shrouding it in a laughable story about the CIA trying to retrieve stolen National Security Agency cyber-weapons, the anti-Trump outlet is still forced to report that after “months of secret negotiations, a shadowy Russian bilked American spies out of $100,000 last year, promising to deliver stolen National Security Agency cyberweapons in a deal that he insisted would also include compromising material on President Trump, according to American and European intelligence officials.”
And that $100,000 was only supposed to be the first down payment towards a cool million.

The CIA was hoping for images of Trump urinating on hookers in Moscow hotel rooms. All they got was a 15-second clip of some guy in a hotel room talking to some women.
The payoff happened in September of last year.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA)
In early 2017, Democrat Adam Schiff, the ranking member of House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (so you would think he would know better), thought he was colluding with Ukrainian officials to get compromising materials against Trump. The Ukrainian officials ended up being Russian pranksters. The best you can say about Schiff is that he colluded with Russians to make a horse’s ass of himself.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA)
In March of last year, Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence committee, colluded with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch to dig up dirt on Trump.
Naturally, because he has no spine, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) immediately ran to Warner’s defense. “Sen. Warner fully disclosed this to the committee four months ago,” the jellyfish tweeted. There is just one problem… If you look at the timeline, that “full disclosure” came a full seven months after the collusion occurred.
Rubio fired off another non-sequitur in Warner’s defense. “Has had zero impact on our work,” Rubio wrote, as though that means anything when it comes to the fact that Warner colluded with Russians to harm a sitting president and hid that information from the committee for more than a half-year.
Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele
Steele is the former British spy hired by the D.C.-based Fusion GPS to put together the phony Russian dossier that even disgraced former-FBI Director James Comey declared “salacious and unverified.”
To compile these lies, Steele reportedly worked directly with Kremlin officials:
How good were these sources? Consider what Steele would write in the memos he filed with Simpson: Source A—to use the careful nomenclature of his dossier—was “a senior Russian Foreign Ministry figure.” Source B was “a former top level intelligence officer still active in the Kremlin.” And both of these insiders, after “speaking to a trusted compatriot,” would claim that the Kremlin had spent years getting its hooks into Donald Trump.
In other words, Steele and Fusion GPS colluded with the Russians to manufacture lies about Trump. Steele then leaked those lies to a complicit media in the hopes of manipulating the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
Fusion GPS also “spearheaded the campaign to undo the Magnitsky Act, American legislation imposing sanctions on Russian officials and other figures close to Vladimir Putin. Their work featured a smear campaign against the driving force behind the Magnitsky Act, financier William Browder.”
If successful, this Fusion GPS campaign would have been of great benefit to the Russian government and countless oligarchs who want the Magnitsky Act’s sanctions lifted.
The Hillary Clinton Campaign
Hillary’s 2016 presidential campaign hired Fusion GPS to put that dossier together. In other words, the Clinton campaign’s paid agents colluded with Kremlin officials to manufacture lies about Trump that would then be leaked to a complicit media in the hopes of manipulating the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
The Democrat National Committee (DNC)
The DNC hired the D.C.-based Fusion GPS to put that dossier together. In other words, the DNC’s paid agents colluded with Kremlin officials to manufacture lies about Trump that would then be leaked to a complicit media in the hopes of manipulating the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
The FBI
Our own FBI not only put Steele on the payroll, a guy who colluded with the Russians to manufacture lies about Trump, the FBI used lies and the dossier — including Kremlin lies — to obtain FISA warrants to spy on Trump campaign affiliates.

Three of the usual suspect Democrat members of the Congressional Black Caucus have been exposed as having attended a meeting in 2013 with the leaders of the Islamic terrorist sponsoring Iranian government as well as the white-hating, anti-Semitic bigot, Louis Farrakhan.
All of the Congressmen were also involved in the Awan espionage case as enablers, who, perhaps not so innocently, provided access to top American secrets that were later stolen. Rep Meeks continued Imran Awan’s employment and defended him long after the news broke of his espionage activities and he had been banned from the Congressional computer system.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hosted the event, which took place following his speech earlier in the day before the United Nations General Assembly. Undoubtedly there was some America bashing thrown in for good measure before that international government cabal. Iranians can’t help themselves and most of the member nations eat that stuff up.
The meeting with the Black Caucus members was originally reported in Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam publication “Final Call,” but remained unknown otherwise until the Wall Street Journal revealed it in a Friday column.
Ellison has a long history with Farrakhan, attending the 1995 Million Man March and lying publicly in his defense over truthful allegations of his unbridled anti-Semitism.
The existence of a photo of Hussein Obama mugging it up with Farrakhan in a secret Congressional Black Caucus meeting in 2005 just recently came to light, as Democrats knew the negative impact of Obama being associated with a radical anti-American, Islamic Jew-hater would be a hindrance to his presidential ambitions.
After all, this was about the same time he was trying to convince Americans that he was not, as he had previously stated, a Muslim, but actually a Christian; an America-cursing Christian. He’s not a commie either, we were told, despite similar overwhelming evidence.
The Daily Caller reports that even the radical, extreme leftist Southern Poverty Law Center has denounced the Nation of Islam as a hate group for their “theology of innate black superiority over whites and the deeply racist, anti-Semitic and anti-gay rhetoric of its leaders.”
This is the kind of trash that populates the Democrat Party. They didn’t just happen to pick up some bad Bolshevik apples along the way to their one world government utopia. They are in the bad apple business.
They are all anti-American subversives by design. Otherwise they have no place in and no value to the Democrat Party, a progressive movement to overthrow the representative government of the United States disguised as an increasingly radical political party.

by Michael Swartz: Our federal budget process is supposed to go like this: The House comes up with a budget resolution and a dozen appropriation bills to fill it out, then passes them and sends them to the Senate, which does its job followed by any necessary reconciling between the bills. Then the budget moves along to the president, who signs it before the next fiscal year begins on the first of October. That’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway. In practice, though, this annual exercise stumbles along between continuing resolutions as partisans from both parties hold the budget hostage to get what they want out of the deal. Recently, we were treated to the latest in a predictable series of government “shutdowns” that essentially amount to paid vacations for federal employees. Early this morning, after a brief midnight shutdown forced by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who objected to the proposed budget’s spending increase, the House and Senate cobbled together the necessary votes and sent it to President Donald Trump for his signature. Both houses actually agreed to a two-year deal presented by Senate leadership, but they face another deadline of March 23 to hammer out the details.
“When the Democrats are in power, Republicans appear to be the conservative party,” Paul tweeted. “But when Republicans are in power, it seems there is no conservative party.”
Naturally, that long-term security comes with a big price tag — an additional $320 billion in deficit spending during that time period — but we finally get an increase in military spending after years of sequester-mandated cuts. In addition, the Senate deal eliminates some lingering liar-nObamaCare gems like the “death panels.”
Yet for all those guns, the Democrats have larded us up with a lot of butter. And the Republicans have gone right along. As The Wall Street Journal put it, “Democrats backed up the truck for funding on everything from community health centers to billions on child-care grants to $20 billion for infrastructure.” One example is the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which leftists blasted the GOP for not immediately reauthorizing after it expired late last year. A recent six-year extension is now a decade-long boondoggle. Democrat demands for dollar-for-dollar parity with increased defense spending also netted them more money for infrastructure, and a relief from running up against our artificial debt limit until sometime next year.
“What happened to the Democrats’ ‘Better Deal?’” asks The Washington Post. “Check the spending bill.” Chuck clown-Schumer crowed, “This budget agreement shows that the Better Deal agenda is more than a set of ideas; now, it’s going to be real policies. It delivers on exactly what we laid out last year: rural broadband, child care and assistance with college tuition.” Good thing the GOP controls both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue!
That additional money spent on non-essential items in return for simply undoing cuts that arguably should never have been made to the (constitutionally mandated) defense of our nation is the part of the bargain that rankles some House Republicans — the ones who were elected by the Tea Party to fight against these types of deals.
“I am baffled why the Republican Party has turned into such a big spending party. It is one thing to spend money; it is another thing to spend money you don’t have,” lamented Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama, who was elected in the initial 2010 Tea Party wave. Brooks vowed to be a “hell no” vote on the deal and was joined by several other fiscally conscious Republican stalwarts.
But Brooks and company seem to have missed the memo that deficit spending is back in style. And while it may goose the GDP rate slightly and makes individual members look better when they have some pork to share, the issue is that increasing interest rates will make this deficit spending even worse than it appears now. For their part, Democrats complained loudly about raising the deficit by $1.5 trillion over 10 years (a spurious number anyway) with the recently passed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but they’re now dead silent about similar amounts of deficit spending.
So this grand bargain, as well as the omnibus spending bill that will follow it in a few weeks once all the appropriations are ironed out, will be the product of centrist House Republicans joining with middle-of-the-road Democrats. Conservatives oppose this bill for its deficit spending, while far-left Democrats are enraged that it doesn’t include a resolution to the DACA issue. Those who may directly benefit from this largesse will be the big winners, but since all this was accomplished without a scintilla of meaningful entitlement reform — President Trump long ago promised not to touch Social Security or Medicare — our children and grandchildren will once again be big losers. Sen. Warner's 'Back Channel' Is No Witch Hunt
by Political Editors: On Thursday, Fox News reported that Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, had been communicating with Adam Waldman, a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch, who offered him access to the British ex-spy and author of the anti-Trump dossier Christopher Steele. The story points to a string of text messages between Warner and Waldman in which it appears that Warner seeks to have a private conversation with Steele before any official testimony would be given to the full committee. Donald Trump responded to the story tweeting, “Wow! — Senator Mark Warner got caught having extensive contact with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch. Warner did not want a ‘paper trail’ on a ‘private’ meeting (in London) he requested with Steele of fraudulent Dossier fame.”
However, several Republican members on the committee quickly pushed back against the allegations and actually defended Warner. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) tweeted, “Sen. Warner fully disclosed this to the committee four months ago. Has had zero impact on our work.” An aide to committee chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) noted that the senator was aware of Warner’s use of a “back channel” attempt to try to get to Steele, and he had no concerns about it.
In the end, this story appears to be more media hype than real news. Hey, it even got a tweet from Trump. While it’s no secret that Warner is no fan of Trump, assuming the worst of the senator without applying or seeking context is why much of the mainstream media’s reporting on Trump has been so biased and many times downright false. What makes this story a story is the MSM treatment of the whole Russiagate scandal. When mere accusations and innuendos are appealed to as facts, the result is fake news. ~The Patriot Post

The president is keeping his promise: “When it comes to terrorism, we will do whatever is necessary to protect our nation.” Fortunately, Barack liar-nObama never delivered on his 2009 executive order to close the facility at Guantanamo Bay, yet his order still needed to be reversed. The liar-nObama administration worked from a failed ideology of peace through appeasement. In contrast, President Trump understands Ronald Reagan’s concept of “Peace Through Strength.” That is, maintaining peace by keeping our strength, not by enabling the enemy.
While it may appear humanitarian to “free all prisoners,” this perspective ignores the real threats terrorism poses to our nation’s safety and to the world. It compromises the Rule of Law and ignores the reason why the detainees are imprisoned in the first place: These unlawful enemy combatants either harmed or sought to harm innocent people. To free such fighters who are intent on murdering innocent people, while claiming no responsibility for the resulting deaths, qualifies as the true action of inhumanity.
Since Sept. 11, 2001, the United States has remained engaged in armed conflict with the Taliban, al-Qaida and associated forces such as the Islamic State. This stands as a fact, not simply a “perspective.”
As part of his constitutional role as commander in chief, the president has the authority to detain certain persons associated with terrorism. The Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) from Sept. 18, 2001, as explained by the White House fact sheet, states,
The AUMF authorizes the United States to detain certain persons who are part of or provide substantial support to al-Qa'ida, the Taliban, or associated forces engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners. Decisions regarding the disposition of captured terrorists will be made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account legal requirements and the facts of each case.
As such, the president remains responsible not only to manage the armed conflict between the U.S. and al-Qaida, the Taliban and Islamic State, but to take actions that preserve the safety of American military members and civilians.
The executive order “would preserve military detention as a counterterrorism tool by maintaining detention facilities at the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (GTMO), Cuba and stating unequivocally that the United States reserves the right to detain terrorists under the law of armed conflict.”
While the U.S. currently utilizes counterterrorism tools such as military action and intervention, it must retain the right to detain enemy combatants. This stands in accordance with the law of war principles. Without the right to detain prisoners, the war on terror becomes a meaningless fishing expedition of “catch and release.” The White House fact sheet notes, “The detention of enemies captured in an armed conflict is a lawful and necessary tool of warfighting that must continue to be available to the United States.” The executive order also reaffirms the right of the U.S. to transport and detain more enemy combatants to Guantanamo when necessary.
More than 100 former prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay have re-entered combat as terrorists, killing both Americans and our allies in coalition forces. Keeping the Guantanamo Bay detention facility open averts that risk, while prioritizing safety and security for innocent people who remain targets of international terrorism.
The executive order also emphasizes the use of the existing periodic review process that helps authorities to determine whether the continued detention of certain prisoners is necessary.
Finally, the order notes that “the detention operation at the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay are legal, safe, humane, and conducted consistent with United States and international law.”
President Trump’s executive order to keep the Guantanamo Bay detention facility open allows the United States to act as a sovereign nation, capable of winning the war against radical Islamic terrorism worldwide. Without this counterterrorism tool, victory will elude us, and innocent civilians will serve as terrorism fodder in the name of “peace” and “understanding.” The commander in chief understands this and has willingly acted to protect innocent civilians who are targets of terrorism in the United States and throughout the world. ~The Patriot Post

BREAKING: Iran military launches first direct military operation against Israel
More of the poisonous fruit of Obama’s treasonous financing of the genocidal Islamic Republic of Iran. Obama fought tooth and nail for this evil regime. Obama’s legacy is his nuclear pact with the world’s leading state sponsor of terror. Trump should have ended it already. He hasn’t. Even if he does, Obama delivered wooden pallets of cash to the mullahs. We aren’t getting that money back. And the Iranians have used it to aid terror groups and plot the destruction of Israel. Where are the Senate hearings on that? Where is the special prosecutor from the illegal payoff to terrorist actors?
Iran, under Islamic law, is viciously antisemitic, which is a religious imperative under Islam. Perhaps that was what Obama found the most compelling. His hatred of the Jewish state is well documented. The enormous sums of American taxpayer dollars transferred to the world’s largest state sponsor of terror was treasonous and unconscionable. The hell that President Obama’s feckless submission to Iran could unleash in the coming years might turn history on its ear. While Obama attempts to burnish his catastrophic legacy, the fallout from his treachery is going to blow up the world. Trump can’t undo that deal fast enough.

Overnight Iran launched its first direct military operation against Israel, dispatching a drone commanded from the Tiyas Airbase in Syria’s central Homs region [a][b].
The Israelis used an Apache helicopter to intercept and down the drone [c], then sent four jets to destroy the command center (an Israeli military spokesperson confirmed “accurate hits of Iranian UAV control facility” [d]). One of the Israeli F-16s was abandoned by its pilots over Israel, amid what the Israelis describe as “massive Syrian anti-air fire” [e][f]. Syrian anti-aircraft fire reached Israeli territory, triggering extended emergency activities in Israel’s northern communities [g].
Iran and its proxies had been escalating their threats to attack Israel over the last few weeks. Hezbollah threatened to attack Israel for a range of reasons, from energy resource disputes [h] to the Israelis building a border fence [i]. Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, one of the front-runners to be the next Iranian Supreme Leader, toured the Israeli-Lebanese border and boasted about operations to secure “Jerusalem’s liberation” [j].
A couple of things to watch:
(1) Military — Iran and its proxies have structured their forces in Syria and Lebanon to guarantee mass casualties during their next war with Israel — In Syria, Hezbollah says it has 10,000 fighters ready to attack Israel and to create a single front across all of Israel’s north and northeast [k]. In Lebanon, Hezbollah has transformed hundreds of villages into “military strongholds,” according to the AP, effectively conscripting human shields who will become civilian casualties blamed on Israel, according to the NYT [l][m]. They’ve stockpiled roughly 150,000 rockets and missiles, allowing them to saturation bomb Israeli population centers with 1,500 rockets and missiles per day for over three months, and Hezbollah chief Nasrallah says the group will use those projectiles against Israel’s civilian nuclear installations and chemical facilities, triggering tens of thousands of casualties [n][o][p]. Hezbollah leaders also say their Syrian battle experience will allow them to launch a ground invasion of Israel, in part through advanced hardened military tunnel infrastructure [q][r].
(2) DC politics and policy — The exchanges touch nuclear and non-nuclear Iran issues — On nuclear, recent reports confirmed that parts of the windfall Iran received from the nuclear deal flowed to Hezbollah [s]. On non-nuclear, the Trump administration this month targeted Hezbollah with sanctions [t]. Differing proposals to fold missile restrictions into the nuclear deal are at the core of the debate over President Trump’s request for Congress and Europe to “fix” the deal [u][v][w][x].
